Default 2000 Dyna Speedo/Engine Light Issue

Yesterday when I was riding I noticed on my way home my speedo went blank (no mph, no mileage or trip) and only showed the red ENGINE light.
I also have a tach which worked fine.
It was during the day in so I couldn't tell if any lighting changed under rpm or anything like that.

With this being said at idle the speedo worked fine however, as soon as the rpm's went up slightly it would go blank.
Also it would do the same underway. I could ride and pull the clutch in letting the motor go down to idle speed and the speedo would come back to life.
My guess is the voltage regulator but with my schedule I haven't had a chance to put my meter on it and check voltage across the battery.
Other than my speedo going blank and engine light illuminating it ran fine from what I could tell.

Has anyone experienced these symptoms before? If so what was the fix?
Am I assuming the troubleshoot method correctly or am I off?

All help is appreciated.

It could be from loose or dirty battery cables. Corrosion will do funny things to the bike's electrics. Before you check the VR, make sure both ends of both cables are clean and tight. You might have to remove them to get them clean.

The cables are good on both ends, I cleaned all of them when I just recently replaced the battery a couple of months ago. Thank you for you input though I'll definitely check again.

Just fired it up and put my meter on the battery. 17.2V at a high idle choke pulled cold start. I think that may have something to do with it.

Update:
The stator checks out as good with resistance within parameters and no continuity.
However, there was oil? in my plug.
I don't know how that would happen but I'm guessing I'll go with just a regulator and see if that solves it.

Sounds like what happened when my regulator went out except that I had a DTT and it uses the engine light to flash a code for over voltage.. If it's doing it regular, unplug the alternator and see if it stops.

Thanks for the advice! It has the stock ignition for now but not for long I really need to throw some timing at it.
I put the new regulator on and she's ready to ride again.

Look right above that plug.......

Looks like someone got sloppy with oil filter changes....

While the oil could be oil from an oil change but with the age of the bike and if the stator is original, it could simple be from oil leaking down the wires from alternator. My 2000 FXDX did that. You find more oil inside the connector than out.. I replaced my stator when the center of the rotor blew out somewhere around 50000 miles..

It sure could be and most likely from the previous owner, I've only changed the oil once after I built the motor and didn't lose a drop haha.

Yeah that was surely the case. I sprayed a lot of electrical cleaner in the plug and shoved some dielectric grease in there to be sure everything was good. So far everything still seems to work fine.
