I've done it. Boy, you aren't kidding. What I thought was a 15 minute job took a couple hours.
There's a couple shortcuts you could use, but I didn't.
First, you don't really NEED to remove the tank. You just need to remove the front tank bolt and pivot it as far up as it will go. Use a piece of scrap wood (or something) to wedge it up and hold it there. The object is just to be able to open the plastic wire panel below the tank.
If you really want a shortcut, don't worry about the existing wiring. Just snip the wire coming out of the handlebar control units, and snip the other end just before the turnsignal plug under the tank. Then just re-wire.
Of course, these examples are the hillbilly way of doing the job, but you'll save alot of time.
Yeah, they don't tell you that you need to drop another $60 for the service manual to install that $30 part! I took the easy way out with a cut and splice job.
Just so happens I'm doing that today.
I bought the kit a few weeks ago, read the instructions, and said" Heck NO!"
Took the old ones off, put the new relocations on, and just let the wire come down from the top.
Now today is another story, lifting the tank, so gonna do the original relocation job right.
In reality, I'm still debating if i even like the new kit, they kinda stick out too far for my taste.
Have just bought the Harley turn signal relocater kit for my street bob thinking it was going to be a straight forward job.
How wrong was I? there are three pages of instructions and it starts with remove the tank!
Has anybody done this job and are there any shortcuts? Don't really want to pay the local stealer to do it but at the moment it looks beyond me[&o]
Yup, same thing here, as soon as I read "remove tank" I said f that. Think i'll just wait till winter when I cant ride and will feel no rush to get it done.

Ok gonna give it a go, whats the worst that can happen right?
It's easy. It took me about 20 minutes, but I have a bike lift to make it easier. You don't have to remove the tank or drain it. Just remove the saddle and the tank bolts and slide the tank back. It'll help a lot if you get a highlighter and highlight the instructions that apply to your bike and work through it that way. Then you won't get confused in the heat of battle.
