The Mid USA charging system says it replaces 29985-87 and your bike calls for 29970-88d.. Make sure you get the right one..

Assuming that the OP is really saying stator, not sure how a steering wheel puller is going to get it off.

It sounds to me like the OP is trying to get the rubber plug into the slot where it goes to the outside. Isn't there a set screw that need to be removed? I assume the thing was lubed before going in..

Too bad you didn't make up some alignment pins out of some headless bolts so at least after "driving it home", you could install the real bolts and worry about getting it off when / if the next failure occured ... assuming everything else worked out

I use mine all the time on clutch baskets, I don't see why it wouldn't work to get the stator off.. You just need really long screws or maybe threaded rod even and you will have to tap the mount holes.. Nothing is impossible, You know that Max your machinist..

I never heard any mention of the rubber plug.. He said he was banging the stator on with a rubber mallet.. I could be wrong but that's what I thought I read.. Who knows anymore, my mind is slipping..

Saw more info, sounds like he beat the stator on and can't get it off.. Your idea will work but I'd replace the stator afterwards as it will likely pull the laminations apart. The screws are only 10-24 typically or about 0.194 diameter.

I'll tell you one thing If I couldn't get a stator on and it was too tight I'd be measuring something.. I'd never beat that on with a hammer... Jesus... Reminds me of primitive Pete...

Most parts are too expensive to use a hammer on. But I'm believing 80+% of all HD forum posts are trolls. I just can't believe what people do, and don't know the basics.

But then that might have been any of us a long time ago.

just to let everyone know i was able to get the stator off with a little liquid wrench oil and tugging on either side until i felt a little give. I did not pound that much so it was not on as much as i thought. Lesson learned i knew after using the hammer it was stupid and thats why i stopped . Thanks for the good ideas that i would have used if this did not work
