I already have SE II slip-ons on my ’06 Super Glide. The service manager at the dealer told me that a lot of people are running those and the Stage 1 kit….without the download. I’m not familiar with all of the technicalities, even though I spent all weekend reading in this forum. I didn’t have a download done when I put on the slip-ons (year and a half ago)…I just bolted ‘em on and rode…seems to run fine. So….can I install the breather kit without having the download? I’ve read so much here about "lean"…I’ve got five more years of payments, so I don’t want to do anything to harm the engine.
My understanding is that no, you don't need a download with just slip-ons.
You DO need to change the EFI mapping when you increase the airflow by adding an after market or SE A/C. Otherwise, the bike will run too lean (more air, not enough fuel). I put on a pair of V&H slip-ons and got the SE Stage 1 A/C and a download at the same time. Also, switched to synthetic oil. Bike runs MUCH cooler, MUCH faster, and MUCH smoother.
The download from the dealer is the least. Most people get some sort of fuel management system, PCIII, SERT, ThunderMax, etc. That way you can make other changes and not need to pay out bucks to the dealer for downloads to the ECM. If you don't plan on adding more that just the stage one the download is worth the $150.
But take it from me, the Stage 1 is just the begining. Next will be cams, big bore, heads, throttle bodies, strokers, it never ends.
you will need something to change ( richen up) the fuel injector schedule. otherwise you"ll risk burning valves, tops of your pistons or worse. your decision at this point is this. do i want to modify the internals of the engine (cams, big bore, different heads) then you should go the sert, pcIII, power commander items that will control timing and fuel injectors. do i want to just increase fuel and not touch the engine, then a DFO, TFI or something that will only affect the injectors opening times. in either case you'll have to open up your wallet and one more than the other. good luck, enjoy your ride.
