I have a 2000 Dyna Wide Glide. Owned it about 6 months, 17,000 miles on it. inherited it when a brother passed. Garage kept and well taken care of. With all that said, this issue just started.
Start bike, Rev engine, dash goes dark, engine light comes on and spedo kind jumps up maybe a 1/6 on an inch and stays there.
I have cleaned and check all conections under dash. No visable wear marks I can see in the harness. Even took the ingintion switch apart and cleaned it. Bike has had no mice. This is a clean bike that has been well maintained.
Ideas?
I have a '00 that has done some wacky things similar to those you describe when the battery starts to go bad. Funny thing is the battery tested out good.
I turn on run switch, held in the trip button, turn on the ignition and instead of the odometer sweeping to the right it pulled down, buzzed then showed d01CLr.
If I push the trip button it cycles through d01clr - d10clr. Attached is a very short video. So I guess no error codes? Still orginal have issue.

Hey mate, Ive had heaps of electrical issues with my 88. Its an 02. Before replacing anything, check all your grounds AND the positive cable from your starter solenoid to battery terminal (the big 4awg cable). Mine was holding on literally by 4 strands and causing heaps of issues. Unfortunately I only noticed after replacing stator, regulator, battery, relay etc. This cable
Charge the battery and have it load tested, if over 3 years old replace it.
Clean all battery electrical connections (both ends of both cables and the surfaces they contact).
@Jackie Paper Sounds like a fuel issue?? Did you even read the original post?
And I quote,
'Start bike, Rev engine, dash goes dark, engine light comes on and spedo kind jumps up maybe a 1/6 on an inch and stays there.'
Sounded like to me the motor stopped running . Just an opinion. Your the expert but looks like you asssuming a few details first post was not clear about relating.
Like what's it does if USER hits start again?
If I kill a motor while it's running purposely with the clutch, it would do what he said.
Now I agree, if voltage is so low, that would kill it. But if it's got enough voltage to crank and start, it would instantly get enough voltage to run.
Just doing the basics first before the USER starts on the wrong end. But nothing wrong with a good cable check.
Lead the way, I will stand back and watch to keep you happy
