I installed my chrome primary cover today on my 07 FXD. After the bike was put back together, I realised that the old cover had a big black bolt threaded into it about an inch or two behind the hole for the shift rod. I assume that I should have taken it off the old cover and put it into the chrome one before reassembling the bike. Any one know what the hell it is? Please help. I dont want to drive the bike until this is resolved, but I have it stashed in an A-10 gun vault on base and can't keep it there over the weekend. Thanks.
I don't know what it is, but I just switched out mine to chrome last week and didn't do anything with it. I assumed it had something to do with the mid-controls which were swapped out for forwards before I took delivery. I just took my stock primary off and put the chrome one on. No problems so far.
I can't vouch for your '07, but my '04 had an inspection cover which had the shifter in the center, held on by two bolts, one long, one shorter on each side of the hole where the shifter shaft came through. I dont' know if it is the same on the later models that came with the hydraulic primary chain tensioner or not. hope that helps.
Does your primary look like this or is the derby the only opening?
No, it doesn't have an inspection cover, only the derby. But It has a big black bolt or shaft with a torx head on it. Bigger than a T-27 like on the derby cover screws. It threads into the inside of the primary cover facing outward. There is no seal or gasket on it. I think maybe it acts as an internal brace maybe...?...
Do you think maybe it's there strictly for manufacturing purposes? For example, some guitars have an extra hole bored into the body to stabilize it while the routing machines do all of the wood work. It's normaly in a hidden spot that will get covered up. Seems like a stretch, but you never know.
At least he's got a garage! I have to sneak into the gun shop on base to work on my bike. My flight chief is gonna be pissed when he sees my bike in there tomorrow! Luck for me, he's got a softail deluxe.
