Weird issue on my FXDB. I am running the stock speedo and a factory tach with a Guarilia Cabels extension/adapter and every so often, the backlight on both gauges goes out. Gauges continue to function, and the needle light and odometer lights stay lit. I would suspect the backlight bulb but since both gauges go out and come back on at the same moment tells me that's not the cause. It's not a replicable issue either, and doesn't appear to be associated with vibration, they just go out sometimes and come back on sometime later. I usually don't even notice since I very rarely ride at night and can't tell during the day. Any ideas what to check?
The speedo light on my 2012 FXDC used to go out intermittently. It was on more than it was off. Just the light that illuminates the speedo. Everything else worked correctly. Very similar to your problem and mine had completely stock wiring. I occasionally tried to chase down the problem for years, basically checking all connections. No luck. Intermittent electrical problems suck.
Like you, I mostly ride in daylight so it was never really a problem.
Electrical gremlins are the worst, I hope you get it figured out.
You ain't wrong.
My buddy at Zee's Customs Inc. (zeescustomsinc.com) did the LED conversion on the lights gauges for me so I'm going to pick his brain too. Based on how the lights go off and on I doubt that it's related to his work either.
