That filter does not look like it has ever had oil in it.

Once up and running with oil going through the filter, it will never drain out completely.
There will be some evidence of oil inside.
That's what I thought when I started this thread, never seen a filter that dry after removing dozens, auto and MC over the years.
I'll keep an eye on it, maybe change the filter again in the near future just to settle my concern.
No fuzz was seen on the drain plug magnet.
Th bike was parked vertical and not on the jiffy stand, maybe that helped drain the filter.

I always put some oil in a new filter before installing it and I always cut a used filter open to inspect the media. If you do that you can tell if it had oil in it.

Did you have it running at all before you dumped the oil ? Maybe it was installed dry and never ran. I would keep an eye on the level. How much oil did you drain out?

Change the oil, put in a new filter without putting oil in it.. Pull the plugs, run the starter motor for a while. The pull the filter and see if it has oil in it. If it’s still dry..I’d suspect the pump is fubarred. .

Had exact same happen with an '08 Dyna I had years ago. Bought used, bike ran perfect, no oil lights or anything, went to change oil and the filter was dry, same as yours. Filled it with fresh oil, cranked engine with plug wires removed until oil started coming out where filter screws on, put new filter on. Ran bike few minutes, unscrewed filter to check if had oil, plenty came out. Somehow air must have gotten in the pump and oil never made it up to the filter, during this dry filter condition dirty oil circulated fine through the engine. Sold bike to buddy, its been fine to this day.

Because even if oil goes through the bypass and not through the filter it still goes into the motor.

Isn't the bypass valve inside the filter?

Seems at least some do not have an anti-drainback valve.

Yes it's inside the filter. It causes the oil to "bypass" the media for reasons like a clogged media or too thick of an oil.

Right, but the filter would still be full of oil, or at least show signs of having been filled at one time. In other words, oil cannot lube the engine unless it first fills the filter canister.
