Recently acquired an '11 Wide Glide with a Thunder Header and tune. Too loud for my 70 year old ethics. I have the stock system, will I have to change the tune back to stock if I change the exhaust? Looking for a winter project.
Do you HAVE to change the tune when going back to stock pipes? No, the bike/ engine will be perfectly safe. although may run slightly rich. BUT for optimal performance and fuel economy it would best to retune... That said I'd rather run a tune made for the thunder header with stock pipes than I would run the stock tune. IE if you're going to go through the trouble of retuning the bike don't waste your time slapping the stock tune back on the bike, especially if it has an aftermarket air cleaner.

You can get good $$$ for that pipe. I say take that money and go with an exhaust that has the benefits of a Thunderheader without all the noise and fading/rusting/cracking. That exhaust would be a Supertrapp. Keep the stock pipes off the bike.

I did the same on my '98 Dyna and a retune was not required. FWIW I sold the Thunderheader for $275 on Facebook Marketplace. My bike does a non stock free flowing air cleaner.
