I'm wondering if any of that crap came out of the oil pan when he dropped the oil. If no, then I would think that points to it all being in the dirty side of the filter. If yes, then "oh boy..."

It hasn't been sitting. He has been riding it but he bought it less than a year ago. He said it was the filter that was on the bike when he got it. I am still waiting for him to cut the filter open.

There are no brand insignias on the filter and it doesn't have the nut
On the end of it like K&N's do

I don't see how it could have come from the filter, though; it would have to work its way against the flow and through the anti-backflow valve.
Exactly, how did all that crap get on the top of the filter in the first place? And why is it dry? I don't see any traces of oil at all.

Looks like the plastic in the INA cam bearing to me, I’d be opening it now.

Did they use them in 99? I thought they started cheaping out later then that. But even if so, wouldn't it be making a racket if the bearings disintegrated like that?

I forgot about the plastic cages for the inner bearing. This is why they failed. Just like the MDG bearing.
Good catch Dan..

I wonder how long it was left to drain. I don't know if he noticed it immediately or picked it up a few days later and found all the debris. It's a mystery

`99 Dyna is a TC engine, the filter should have an anti-drainback valve, that filter doesn`t have one.

He said he cut open the filter and didn't notice anything out of the ordinary (he doesn't have a whole lot of Harley experience though). He did say no debris in the drained oil at all.
