This is what works for me; put a 2x4 or a 2x6 pice of lumber a foot long or so under the jiffy stand to keep the bike up right as possible, next make sure you have the correct gasket to replace the old one although I have reused my old gasket with out any problems a few times, Next remover the stock cover using a star bit #27 (torx) Make sure you install the cover according to the service manual (you do have a service manual) and a torque wrench I keep mine at 90in-lbs in a star pattern
If you don't keep the bike up-right you will loose some primary fluid (not much BUT it dose become messy
Unless you put forward controls on the SG, you are going to need to remove the shifter foot control and peg mount. Don't forget to make sure that the new cover has the black shaft threaded into the inside of the cover. You will know what I mean when you take the cover off. No one seems to know what the hell it does. I didn't notice mine until after I had put the bike back together. No problems yet, but you should put it in just to be safe. Good luck.
if you have torx head bolts, shi*can them and go to Ace Hardware and get chrome allen head bolts. will make you life much easier next time you change the primary oil.
Ok its replaced, now I have a dumb question: I lost maybe half to a full quart of oil, how do I replace it and check the level? and what kind and weight oil do I replace it with? (I do have forward controls, I noticed the black thing in the stock cover but didnt replace it, now Im worried!) Love the chrome! Thanks for everyones help.
The primary is filled thru the derby cover (there is no dipstick!!, and NO the engine oil doesn't lube the chain inside the primary cover). on older models you could put oil carefully thru the chain adjuster hole, but on the '06s and later it isn't there. with the derby cover off, stand the bike up, or sligthly to the right, and put a quart of HD syn III.
