Default Harley QD Windshield.......

.....on an FXDC. Do they make a big difference? I just sold my Electraglide, and bought an FXDC and was wondering if $400+ for a Harley windshield is really worth that kind of cash. I sold my bagger because I'll be 74 in June and my touring days are over. Plus, the bike was getting too heavy for the kind of riding I do now. So, you that have windshields on you dynas give me some feedback, please. Thanks in advance!

I had a HD QD for my 2012 FXDC. It worked well for me. I started with the 17" windshield and had a lot of buffeting. Changed to the 14" model and it was perfect for me.

That being said, my buddies and I switch out bikes on road trips. One guy is near the same size as me and my setup worked very well for him. Another friend who is shorter thought it was terrible as far as buffeting.

I've found that with windshields, rider size, and the way they sit on the bike has a huge effect on how well the windshields work.

The nice thing about the QD is that you can easily put it on and take it off if you like. The only time mine was on was for long trips or colder weather.

Good luck.

You can get a windshield with all the quick detach hardware for like $50 on CL, eBay, or fb marketplace and buy a new after market shield for $100–150, if it’s scratched. I recently picked up a 15” smoke tinted from Memphis Shades. I found it too tall and cut it back. Started by cutting it back to 13” and finally worked my way down to 12 ź”. I’m 6’.
If it’s the right height it makes a huge difference. Having my head fully exposed in the wind behind a full face is the ticket for me. The shield takes the wind blast off my chest and shoulders. Plus a shorter shield looks better on a Dyna in my opinion.

Thumbs up Windshields

I have a 2000 FXDWG. I wanted a windshield for Highway riding out of town trips. I first looked at the H-D windshields and I just don't like the look of the horizontal support bar. Plus the H-D windshield just looks too large to me.
I looked around at options for a QD windshield and ended up buying a new Memphis Shades , Del Rio solar windshield, and the sportshield Trigger Lock hardware kit (for quick disconnect).

The J&P Cycles website has a windshield size chart. I recall it saying the top of the windshield should be level with the tip of you nose when sitting on the bike and looking straight ahead. It said your eyes should be looking above the windshield. I bought the 16" tall windshield and it is perfect for me. It also looks better than the H-D shield in my opinion.

Can you see the windshield in the photo above?

.

Parts Giant is a sponsor here, they may have a better price. I bought mine 3/25/22 for $256.53
I'm very happy with my purchase.
Edit to add:
To your first question, yes a windshield makes a big difference. I can cruise at 70mph comfortably. Before without the windshield, my sunglasses would be bouncing up and down.

Good looking shield. I forgot about mephis shades “sportshields” I actually had the small version on one of my old fxd’s..del rey. Worked great. As far as the recommendations about the shield needing to come level between the nose and mouth, that never worked for me. Always caused buffeting…..it’s below the chin for me.

I have the Harley quick release mount but changed to a klockwerks shield, it moves the air far better than Harley. I rarely run without it but this week it's not on.

I always hated windshields until I got older. Now I wont ride a bike without one. HD and Memphis Shades make some nice ones.

The frame is from HD. It was a 15" narrow (not sure of the right name, not the police style touring) IIRR from fleabay for about $75. I wanted a little taller shield since I used the 15" with the QR up against the top triple clamp. I went with the 17" Memphis Shades narrow, just the plastic and used the HD frame, fit perfectly in the frame. Perfect for what I wanted. Something to break the wind but not as wide as the full touring shield.

I did made a mount to move the headlight just a bit forward so it is flush with the shield. It didn't look quite right with it behind the shield.

Hope this helps,
Tom
