Default VOES question

Doing a once over before a long road trip. Had the carb off, so I checked the VOES operation per the FSM, which says if it does not turn on at 3.5 to 4.5 "Hg then replace it. Mine turns on at 5.5 "Hg. So I looked up the part number for my 96 Dyna, 26569-96. Dennis Kirk site says it is a 6" Hg switch, which makes the one I have test good by those parameters.

So which is it? Don't have any issues with the timing that I am aware of, just looking at a nearly 30 year old VOES.

Generally, higher vacuum voes setting are used with built motors. So the advance comes in later due to higher vacuum. Is your motor built?

Drag Specialties makes replacement VOES, in 3 or 4 settings. Bad thing about DK is they say what parts fit yer bike. Right or wrong, ya get what THEY say is right, even if it's not. SHOP AROUND!

Interesting. My motor is pretty stock AFAIK, except for an "Andrews Cam" and adjustable push rods. I really don't know more than that at this point. It idles OK, and runs well, except for a sputter down in low RPMs in first or second gear.

Makes it tricky to know what version replacement to buy for a spare.

You can pick out the silicon plug and find a set screw there. Using your ohm meter and vacuum pump. Can set it to what you want. Seal the plug hole with rtv and done.

Really no reason to carry a spare. Or mess with it if it's working right. Which yours is doing.

Yeah, I read where some sub out a bagger model 6" Hg VOES when putting in a more aggressive cam. But since my bike is pretty stripped down, I think it is close to the factory spec of 600 lbs, and I am another 150 lbs. So I split the difference and set mine to 4.5" Hg. Sealed the hole back up with a grommet and RTV, and will see how that goes. Easy enough to put back now that I know how to do it.

Thank you.
