looking for a source for a dyna defender police floorboard set or kit with supports, shift and brake levers, etc.
my wife has a 01 lowrider and very difficult to find floorboards that fit dynas other than the fxdp floorboards which are perfect.
I'd start by googling it...than the dealer (if you have a good parts guy he/she will be able to get the part numbers from service manuals...There may not be a kit you may haveto buy each piece..could get pricey...but let us know
i have found that the defender floorboard kits are obsolete. not just discontinued, but obsolete. according to the computers at the dealerships (i checked with several larger ones), there are no kits on inventory at any dealership in the u.s. anymore. a member of this forum has emailed me a list of the exact part numbers and number of each to order individually according to a 03 dyna police catalog. i will try today to see if the individual items are still available. otherwise, i was wondering other than waiting for something to come up on ebay - if there was a police parts network, etc out there that would possibly have items like the floorboards and shifters listed sometimes. no other places have shown up on google or dogpile yet.
i called chicago harley yesterday by phone because i buy a lot of parts from them. the part number comes up on their computers, but will be automatically back-ordered on the order. the parts man said it was officially obsolete. they had none in stock, there were none available from the factory, and the computers showed there were no dealers in the u.s. with any in current inventory. i hope he is wrong, but it will come up on the shop chicagoharley website as still available, but that is as far as it goes.
Parts list J01921 lists all of the parts. The kits are no longer available but the individual parts are available with the exception of the brake pedal assembly listed. They can order the brake assembly from a 2003 dyna defender police bike in place of the 33699-01A. The brake pedal is different and still available.
Just do a yahoo search on "harley davidson part number 50601-01" and you will get a site for the installation instructions in PDF. All part numbers are listed. Separate price is north of 700.00.
Not sure if you know this or even care, but there are a few of us here who have floorboards. They are not those ones, but they are floorboards, work great and are alot cheaper. I got mine from JPCycle, they are universal fit oval floorboards. Paid somewhere near $150.00 or so and they work great! Would not trade them for anything. Hope this helps.
Just get a parts manual for a Dyna Police bike and all the components will be listed, I did this about a year ago and all the parts were available, but it was pretty costly.
The kits haven't been available for a couple years now.
update: ordered all the individual parts for footboard kit. took a few weeks for one part that was on backorder but still available. everything is now on bike and my wife really loves it. her legs were too short for forward controls and the mid controls were ok for short rides but not comfortable on long rides. they also were in the way when she put her feet down on the ground. with short legs and a seat that had been lowered, narrowed, and moved forward - if she tried to push the bike backward especially, but also sometimes forward - she would hit her shins on the mid-controls. simple floorboards in place of the footpegs definitely did not work, as they actually increased the number of times she hit her shins when trying to maneuver. even a set of mini-adjustable floorboards were tried - they could be moved forward to a point they were no worse than mid-control pegs, but they were out too much for comfort.
the defender footboards are costly unless you can find a kit on ebay, but they would be one of two improvements my wife would make on her next bike if she ever had to buy another - of all the improvements we have made, they are very nice and the ability for her to be comfortable is very much worth the cost involved. (other improvement she liked - racetech front fork kit - really improved overall suspension performance).
she has now added detachable hard bags and a solo tour-pak for long rides, as well as a reverse gear to help in maneuvering especially on slopes. it has been a long process, but she will now ride that bike just about anywhere and feels comfortable enough to actually want to ride a lot. she's going cross country to mississippi in a couple of months on her own to help some close friends - a big jump from her hesitation to ride alone in the past. again - well worth the cost and efforts for us.
