I'm starting to play with the idea of a small fairing for my FXD 2009. I just took a long trip out to the Berkshires and after a couple of hours on the highway, man the wind fatigue really starts to set in. I love the way my bike looks so I don't wish to put on something permanent, I'd like something I can toss on there whenever I know I'm doing a long New England trek. I started to do some research into Memphis Shades, and I saw their Batwing fairing, but it seems like it may be might be a bit too big. I mean, it really makes the bike look like the Batbike. Which isn't a BAD thing per se, just not what I'm looking for. Has anyone played around with detachable fairings? I can't imagine those little cafe fairings do much in terms of wind buffeting. I have 10" apes for bars.
If you are only going to need it for long rides why not just install a detachable windshield?
They offer plenty of wind protection and can be taken off in 30 seconds. Some types don’t even require tools to pop them on or off.
You are right of course - but man, I just HATE the way they look. However I only do the "longer" trips maybe twice a year. So maybe that WOULD be the way to go.
That Batwing fairing almost seems like it would have almost as much wind protection as a straight up windshield.
Which actually begs the question - what exactly is involved with getting these memphis shades on and off? Are they quick-detach like the windshields? Or is it a process? Because if it is, that's the answer right there, I don't want to deal with that ****. haha I want to just ride.

This works to keep the wind off your chest as well as the bugs, Uses HD quick detach clamp style mounting. The shield frame is from HD and the mounts, the plastic is Memphis Shades.

This!! Everything looks awkward on the FX's for some reason in terms of an actual functional fairing. I installed the windshield on both my wifes bikes, a Sportster and a Wide Glide for the exact reason your mentioning. Not sure what the best course is but as far as looks, you get used to it and its well worth not feeling wrecked after 2-3 hours.
I had both the Harley quick release windshield and now the Memphis Shades Bat Wing and the Bat wing is the best for me , and I do a lot of long freeway miles etc for my regular work commute . A windshield is better than no windshield
