Gas Tank
1) Turn on the bike, turn on the ignition, when the fuel pump cuts off pull the fuel pump fuse (see service manual)
2) Start bike and let it run until it quits, bump the starter again to make sure all the fuel past the pump is out.
3)remove the seat and pull the maxi fuse (it's the 40 amp fuse above the others, this is new and means you don't have to pull the neg cable)
4) siphon out as much gas as you can (or just drive it till almost out before starting removal)
5) 2 sets of vice grips, clamp the cross over and then cut between the grips. Insert bolts into each side and remove vice grips.
6) remove fuel line (hint: press up on the collar andthe linewill basically fall away, don't force this, a new one is like 90$ at the dealer)
Now that the cross over and fuel line are removed you can take off the dash, disconnect everything (don't forget the vent line), and finally remove the bolts (front and rear) securing the tank to the frame. Gently side the tank back or have someone hold it up slightly so you can disconnect the fuel gauge. Now pull the tank off and set it down somewhere where you can drain the additional gas out of the cross over lines.
You will need a new cross over line (good time for a chrome one) and a couple of replacement clamps for when it goes back together. I think the ID of the hose is 5/16but just takepart of it to auto zone and get a new one. Theyare about 7 bucks for a 12" length which is more than enough.
There is no need to unscrew that big silver plate under the dash, I was curious so I did but too many screws with such little payoff.
Note: I don't believe you have to remove the fuel gauge from the tank like rockdoc said (at least I didn't on my 06). Just disconnect the gauge and lift the tank off. On my 06 there was a plastic clamp holding the gauge connector to the vent line to keep it tucked into the tank channel, I was not able to access the connector until I raised the tank.
best of luck....and I highly recommend buying a service manual.
