Not to argue with boogie but, If you reach up from under the lower belt gaurd you will notice that it is completely open from under and on the inside with a LARGE gap the only thing this gaurd does is keep things (ie fingers and toes and such) from coming in contact with the belt from above and to the outside of the belt it will do nothing to keep road debrie out of the belt/pully

I went the opposite way...I took the top off because debris from the tire woulddrop on top of the belt and fall off. I kept the bottom on because it seems like it might keep junk from falling onto the "teeth" right before going into the pulley. Maybe i'm just committing to the idea of complete removal a little at a time. The bottom guard was not as ugly to me as the top.

The way my luck runs, I'd pick up s rock or something 500 miles from home and tear my belt or worse.

Yep, even when riding on a one up seat, we still have Mr. Murphy riding along.

My upper is wrinkle black and I leave it on for the sake of my kids, much safer for them.

My lower has been off for a long time with no problems.
I like it not only for the looks but it makes it easier for me to check the belt/tension.
how do you check your belt tension?
the tension scale is integrated int o the lower belt guard.

I use the finger method.
Have been wrenching bikes for a very long time and have a good feel for it.

I've been ruminating on this decision from day 1. Bike is over 2 yrs old and 21K miles.
I like the black better than chrome, but think I' pull it all off for awhile and see if I like it.

Has anyone realized any additional noise, etc. from the belt after removal of the guard and deflector??

I've had mine off for a long while now... no problems (not even from the dealers service center).

The covers are just something Harley has to do for liability reasons...the only thing they are protecting the belt from is your fingers and toes!

If you think it will make the bike look better or your a bit of a rebel...take them off...or if you like the look keep them on...but they aren't there for any other reason than to make sure HD dosn't get sued because some dumba$$ got a toe or finger ripped off!

Now the front fender...that's something I only removed once and after getting caught out in the rain...It went back on as soon as I got home

If you remove your lower, and are missing the "guage" for checking the tension, and don't want to do it by "feel"...you could use a tape measure.
