There was post some time back where someone relocated the ignition switch to the console on a FXD.
ORIGINAL: bikerdog134
the location sucks too
That why I can leave my ignition on the frame in the ON position. I mounted my other switch just below the fuel gauge on the FXD console.
Just fits. The nice thing about that switch is you have a choice whether you want to lock it or not. Makes it much easier at fill ups, etc.
When I am traveling, I lock out both switches (then I can lose 2 keys).

Haven't broke down and looked at the switch that you put on the dash, but you could probaly take it to a locksmith and have it keyed like the other switch if they key ace locks.
Sorry to Hijack this thread.......... Thanks for the idea. Just might go that route someday (then I could carry 2 keys, and still be able to lose 1)
I have had the same thing and recall when I first mentioned in this forum that the position sucked bullets came from everywhere. Anyway Towjam I changed to a wideglide tank then replaced the ignition with a steering head lock so that my lowrider now has the same tank and dash set up as the wideglide and superglide custom. I had always planned to do this from day 1 and it is way better I must say, as for steering head lock not engaging properly it is simply a alignment issue. You need a special tool to do this (I made my own) the procedure is simple just follow the manual, the decal is just stuck on and can be removed damage free. If any one wants to know I will glady pass on info. WD40 fixed mine and it never gave any trouble again up to the changeover
Hope ya'll get this before getting too involved in more complicated fixes:
A quick spray of wd-40 into the switch. If the bike has seen rain or has been washed with water, it gets inside the mechanism and takes away any lubrication properties.
The wd will NOT harm it at all. wd stands for "water displacement"
PLUS: make sure you have no material (lint, rock, etc.) inside the key itself...d'oh!
Mine stuck so bad one day I almost couldn't get it cranked to get home. I stopped by the harley shop on a Sunday, no one there was any help. I went home and thought, maybe it is just sticking and not broken, got the tube of graphite and worked some in the key hole, no problem since.
It suc*s that H-D would make something like this to give everybody such a problem. The street bob I had , I nearly had to make it a habbit to check all the time for the key and I carried 4 keys cause I would be leaving one somewhere laying on the ground or drop it while doing something to the ign.
The Teflon Spray I was suggestion will displace water and is slicker than graphite and will cut the dryness and aciditivy up. The graphine will work but builds up in the ign switch and you wind up gettin it all over you.
I walk up to my bike and notice it's parked right next to a hot blonde in a convertible, and I'm trying to look really cool as I pull on my gloves, fire up my monster, and roll away.
I spend about 10 fricking minutes trying to get the key to turn in the hole, and end up looking like a moron. Meanwhile, the hot blondegives up on me and goes inside to look for zucchini...
