RE: 08 Superglide Custom - did I do the right thing?
You did good not buying that VIP crap.90% of Harley maintenance is changing fluids.I'd say buy a shop manual but I don't have one the owners manual has a maintenance schedule and tells you how often to change the fluids.
RE: 08 Superglide Custom - did I do the right thing?
Service plans?...just follow what the manual says...those guys who wrote it know better than anyone else what these bikes need & when they need it. HD just trying to make a few extra bucks as usual.
I paid $13,900 for my '07 FXDC with already $2K worth of chrome already done to it. They had my bike sold, did some work to it, then the buyer backed out. The problem with spending $16K on an FXDC (anniversary or not) is that your probably going to spend atleast another $2-$4K in accessories on it...now your into the bike for almost $20K! Are you ever going to be able to get even close to that $20K back in trade or resale??? I personally don't think so. One of the reasons I bought the FXDC was because it was what I could afford at the time. I probably would have took that $16K & bought the Wide Glide, but that's just me & I'm not you. Now if that's the bike & colors you absolutely love then more power to you...I sincerely wish you all the best of luck with it!
As far as the anniversary models, IMHO Harley kinda took somethin' away from the 100th models by making a 105th model only 5 years apart. This tells the buyer that if they're gonna keep making anniversary models every 5 years, then how special & unique does that make my particular anniversary? How much does HD even truely value the "anniversary model" if they're gonna make one every 5 years! Does that now make my 100th less valuable now because there's another anniversary model just 5 years apart? Sorry, but I think the answer to this is "yes". I personally think it was ridiculous for Harley to do an anniversary model for '08...just my opinion...I don't particularly care for the colors & most importantly, it just didn't need to be done (IMHO). Just another example of HD trying to make an extra $2-3K off their bikes...that's all. Sorry if I offended you in anyway, it's just my honest opinion that you asked me for.
RE: 08 Superglide Custom - did I do the right thing?
I agree with most of what FXDC Rider said except about the accessories. Yes, you will, whether you think so now or not, spend a couple thousand in add-ons, eventually. But, no matter what bike you do it too, you aren't getting most of that back. So, if you put 20K with accessoriesin this one and could have bought a 20K bike without accessoriesinstead, you'd have 22 - 23K in that one sooner or later - so, what's the difference?
Then again, I didn't get the bike I could afford, I got the bike I wanted because I know how I am when I don't. I'd always want the other and wouldn't rest until I had it. The ONLY bike I'd trade mine for is a SE dyna. Ain't gonna happen though, I don't think. (Yes, Ultra Classic guys, not everyone wants one of those beasts).
I'm trying to save most of my original take-off parts so when I do go to sell it (if I ever do), I'm putting it back close to stock and I'll sell whatever accessories are worth selling and/or use them on my next bike if they'll fit. That's one reason I'm not dicking around with and putting a bunch of money in the motor. I like the way it runs just fine and I don't need it to go any faster and I'd never get that money back.
RE: 08 Superglide Custom - did I do the right thing?
Why finance the extended service plan and pay interest on it. I went with the 500, 1000 and 2500 and every 2500 after that. I would let the dealer do the 500 and 1000 mile. Then git a manual and learn how to do it yerself if you are capable. I'e let the dealer do the 10,000 and 20,000 service too.
The super glide is a great entry level bike with the 96cu and 6 speed transmission. You will like the heck out of yer bike. Just break it in right and wind yer gears longer with the new 6 speed.
Don't try to git into 6th gear for a long time unless yer on 70mph till you have yer motor loosened up.
You will notise around 2500 miles it starts to loosen up more too.

I'm never offended! I appreciate all of your answers. This is sort of what I was thinking too. 100th anniversary, I can see. But 105?? Why another after just 5 years?? I figured it may have been because of trying to improve sales or something, due to slowing sales. Perhaps it was done because of the newer models they introduced in '08 as well? Who knows. We'll see how it goes.
I did have a different dealer (not the one I bought it for) say that the 105 anniversary bikes will be different than the previous since there's a limited amount made, and not that many on the streets. I guess it will just depend on how well everyone takes to the new colors.
I'll send some pictures of it in the sun so you can see the metal flake in the copper. I think I'll post a questionaire to see what the majority thinks. Keep the comments comming and thanks!
RE: 08 Superglide Custom - did I do the right thing?
You no that everybody feels they can have done better with the price afterwards. Just ride it and don't drop to much into it because you will never get your money back if you are looking into the future. I was told after 10,000 miles it depreciates, so don't fall in love with something that you will not have, just ride and enjoy the moment.
RE: 08 Superglide Custom - did I do the right thing?
I paid $14665 +$300 for freight, which is list, + tax, title and license for one with the factory alarm. The "smooth" laced wheel comes with the anniversay model. I didn't think this was a bad price ($12995 for the standard model, then add for paint, alarm and wheels). I'm not sure about the "value" of it as an anniversary model. Neither was my dealer. He said it "may" have some value as the are only going to be 2000, as there hasn't been a limit on the previous anniversary editions.
I like the "wheels" without the ridge.

I have been told by several people, but have not yet been able to confirm it with my own eyes yet, that the 08 FXDC (non-anniv model) has a MSRP of $12,995.
