Thinking about painting my Pythin 2 into 1 pipe blackand I got a few questions before I do it.
1. Should I try to strip the chrome off first?
2. What type of paint is best for this?
3. Should I paint the heat shield only, or heat shield and headers?
High temp paint, for sure. I had my shields and mufflers powder coated and the mufflers have discolored a bit compared to the heat shields. You may get away with just painting the heat sheilds and mufflers. Definately have to prep the surface Scuff it up with very fine grit sandpaper or scotch-brite wipe down with thinner/cleaner before painting..
I am painting my Nightster stock exhaust, (with Cycle Shack slipons), this winter, probably end of December.
I bought my paint here after numerous recommendations http://www.speedunleashed.com/VHT_Pa...t-p-19386.html
I bought 2 cans of the primer and 2 cans of flat black. I'm taking my parts to a chrome removal place not far from where I live. They are going to remove all the chrome off my full exhaust system for $55.00.
I have seen a few other nightsters with black exhaust and it sure looks sweet.
If it comes out crappy I'll just by the new V&H black side shots ..... if not I will keep them on for a while.
I would consider doing my Dyna Super Glide but I think it would clash with the grey powder coated engine.
Good luck to you ...... I'll post pics in the Sportster section when I'm done.
I have the same pipe on my 06, and the chrome quality kind of sucks. I want to have mine black chromed along with the shock covers, fender struts, and triple trees. Try painting the inside of the pipes with ordinary BBQ spray paint, that seems to protect the finish pretty good.
i just used black bbq paint on my thunder header. came out fine.the primarys and muffler are now a flat black and the reversion cone is actually a little glossy due to less heat i'm guessing. swoopy 2 tone paint job on my pipe.
