Default 07 Oil Level QUestion

I just changed my oil/filter after 3000 miles from HD original dino to Mobil-1 VTwin 20W-50.

Prior to changing it, I noticed the cold level was halfway down the dipstick and the hot level was at the top of the crosshatched part, just as the manual states.

I changed and added about 2.5 QT (as the manual states, I guess .5 qt doesnt drain out when you change it - yes, changed the filter also).

After changing, here are my readings:

The COLD level is with the bike cold, rear cylinder was 60F. After running for 5 minutes, rear cylinder was about 240F (using infrared meter).

How is this explained? Opposite of the dino oil before changing to the M1 synthetic? Can others try to see if they get similar results?

B

The oil has to circulate through the engine and oil filter and then back to the oil tank. It is due to the design of a Harley engine and should be considered normal. If you read the manual, at least in mine it says to run the bike for a few minutes and then check the level again. Somone else can explain in more detail...

Of course, I understand. Here is the funny part, my cold level is higher than my hot level, the opposite of what it was with dino oil. I ran it long enough, and let it set long enough before checking.

Dynamite, the syn vs dino oil won't make any difference in level. Are you checking it on the Jiffy stand? Also, are you screwing it down all the way when checking? Just asking the obvious..but I did it wrong at first.[&:]

Yup, on the Jiffy stand (hate that term!) and level in the garage. Oil cap screwed all the way down when checking etc...
