Question for you or if you noticed the same and did something about it. I live in SoCal and the highways don't really have speed limits...knock on wood...soI usually coast at 75-85 MPH. Note that at this speed, I'm still a bit slow from normal traffic flow--generally. So my question is this...
I have a '05 Super Glide Custom EFI so only 5 gears. When going above 70, RPM's sound a bit high. No Tach to tell you how high though, but I'm sure it's sucking a lot of gas. I still have plenty of throttle left so I'm wondering if it's normal or other. I tend to get about 25-30 mpg.
I do have a stage I with V&H BS staggered.
Anyone have any suggestions other thantrading in for '06 or higher...someday but not today
Regear, slow down, or don't worry about it. Hd or after market should have rear sprockets with fewer teeth. This might mean a shorter belt depending on what sprocket you can find.
I think andrews has larger front sprockets.
Of course the whole primary and swingarm have to come off if new belt is needed.
I wouldn't mess with anything requiring belt replacement. Ride it and be happy you get to run it hard.
I am new to the whole belt thing, but the basic idea seems the same as a chain. You could effectively change you final drive ratio by changing out your rear sprocket for a smaller one. A taller tire would have the same effect. You would loose a little getup and go, but it would drop your RPMs at every speed. The other alternative would be cracking open the transmission andchanging out your fifth gear for a taller gear. I am not sure what the options are out there for this stuff, but in principle any one of these would work.
I live in L.A. and I know what you mean. When traffic is light or moderate, 70 is slow in the fast lane. I have an '06 Dyna WG and really like the sixth gear but I'm not into it until I reach 70 mph. I don't know what the gearing is but I wouldn't think it wouldn't make that much difference. Maybe check your plugs for rich conditions and maybe a dyno. I'm stock (so lean) and I'm getting around 45 on fwy at 70 to 75. Maybe what you are getting it about right with your set up and 5 gears. Gas savings would not be worth cost to switch out tranny I would think.
