My ride is a 07 FXDWG and I need to find a super comfortable seat for my gf. We went for a ride last night and her butt was hurting after 30 mins on the bike (stock seats). Any first hand experience on "touring" seats would be much appreciated. How different are older model wide glide seats compared to the 07? Thanks in advance.
My stock '04 WG seat sucked ***. I bought a Mustang seat and love it. I got the touring seat and although the two-up seat isn't the "coolest" looking, I could give a sh*t because it's comfortable for both me and the wife. I have also heard good things about the Sundowner, but have only owned the Mustang, so can't comment on others. The Mustang aint cheap though...mine was $400. Pay for what you get - awsome quality and workmanship compared to the stock plastic piece of crap.
The Sundowner is a very popular choice here. It has a deep bucket for the driver and the widest, thickest passenger pillon available. I have one that was used on my Wide Glide for 8 months and is in perfect condition. Asking $150 plus shipping. I replaced it with a custom seat when passengers were no longer an issue for me.
I'm a fan of the Sundowner as well. I ended up purchasing this seat for the same reasons you mention in your post -- passenger complaints. I was perfectly fine with the stock seat.
Now all I hear out of her from time to time is, "I loooooove this seat!"
As you can see, the wider/thicker passenger seat will shut them up, but it doesn't exactly compliment the lines of the bike. The roll bag will soften the lines a little so the drop off from seat to fender isn't as drastic... but oh well I needed to make her comfortable -- she does my laundry.
Here are a few shots of how it will look on your 07' Wide Glide.
I have the Corbin dual touring seat and my wife and I love the support & comfort. It won't work with rigid mount sissy bar brackets, though, so the switch has turned into a bit more money than we had planned on.
Bought a Sundowner from the MoCo for the exact same reason for my '07 FXDC and she loves it. No more numbness in the leg due to the narrow stock p-pad and now I can't get her off it. Could be worse things...lol
That is the great pictures you got there Wyde Glyde Bry . I got Sundowner seat also and rode to 2007 Sturgis Rally , my wife never complain about the seat , her sister got to seat on a softail stock seat and almost couldn't stand it for 1 hrs ride .
Sundowner and the tallest backrest you can stand will do the trick. My recommendation is to make the backrest QD and swap the Sundowner out for your sleeker seat when you're just cruising solo if you are concerned about the look.
I have a 07' dyna lowrider seat on my bike. In stock form the seat sucks, but I did not want to put on a touring seat because of the looks. So what I did was send my seat to Mean City Cycles for a rebuild. They raised it up 1" and back 1" per my request and also added memory foam to it for $90. Now it seems the longer I ride, the better it feels and best of all, it still looks stock.
