Default dyna engine design

Thinking of getting either a new Sportster or a new 2008 FXD Dyna (with a nice price decrease for 2008!!).One thing I believe the Sportster engine has in its favor is less chains. It uses gear driven cams and no counter balancer chain.I can't seem to find an online engine diagram of the Dyna engine, but I understand it uses chain driven cams and a counter balancer set driven by a chain? Where theres a chain there has to be a tensioner of some sort.So a question to owners of the Dyna line of HDs-are these chains and tensioner mechanisms a weak point on these bikes? There are many cases on Japanese bikes with double overhead cams (chain driven) where the cam chain tensioners caused problems, and the Kawasaki KLR650 dual sport uses a chain driven set of counter balancers and that system has a well documented problem with the balancer chain tensioner (long time KLR onwers sometimes call this device (toungue in cheek) the "doohickey").
Thanks for your comments, Jon

There is no counterbalancer on the Dyna as it has a rubber mounted motor.

The cams are roller chain drive with hydraulic tensioners. These run pretty quiet compared to gear drive cams.I've not heard of any problems with this set up yet - maybe they are still too new? Earlier(2005 and older) Dynas had a silent chain with sprung tensioners which caused some wear issues.

Thanks.Somewhere I got the idea that the Dynas used the counterbalancers.I would rather not have them myself as I think it would add complexity. The Dyna is sounding better and better to me.

I have an 06' Superglide and my buddy has a 06' 1200 custom Sporty. all I can say is night and day. wow. i have over 10000 miles and he has under 500, and it is for sale. Sporty is a fun bike, but i would go with the Dyna hands down.

just my 2 cents, i own a02 and 05 dyna, both have the chain driven cams with spring loaded cam tension shoes. the 06's and up have the hyd cam tensioners, have not heard of any issues with this set up. i've read where HD was going to go gear drive on the cams but the noise level wasn't acceptable to some. the only down side i've read on the 96's is that because the engine stroke is a tad longer the pistons actually move faster (wear on cyl. walls). all in all a good motor, the counterbalancers are in the softtails engines. they are rigid mounted and are also known as "B" motors. ride safe.

there is a compensator on the left side of the motor in the primeary.and i thought my 07 96 inch had a cam shoe for the cam chain.
and i here the cam chain shoe needs to be changed out at 25000 miles.

Gave up my sporty several years ago for a EVO FXD. I just bought a EVO FLTCU. My conclusion is the FXD is the real sporty and more versitile. My biggest problem with the sporty was the short wheel base. I'm only 5'-9" and when you see someone riding a sporty from 50' away you'll see what I mean. If you were only going to spent $5K then buy a sporty and you'll have fun. If your going to spend more $7K buy a used or new FXD. I just pasted thru the dirt bike phase with my son and sold off the dirt bikes. You can throw around a FXD just like a dirt bike and you got more HP and room to grow with a FXD over a sporty.

I agree on the FXD. Did some off-roading with mine yesterday.
