Caution. Often a windshield can make matters worse with buffeting. One to tall and you cannot see thru it. one to low and it can make things worse. A roll of the dice here. Words of wisdom as i have been down this road several times with bikes. You need to see over the top , not look thru the windshield . Many agree with this . I just ordered a shorter one for my Heritage as the stock one was way too tall.
I have had my compact HD windshield for only two weeks. I'd been wanting one and a benefit ride in the cold motivated me to get one. I was very skeptical based on reviews in the forums here. I am pleasantly pleased with the experience. There is definately buffeting, but it is minimal compared to wind hitting my chest at 65 mph and the relief from the cold temperatures.
For those of you in helmet states, remember that the helmet effects how much buffeting happens. I had a problem with buffeting and tried various solutions. When I had to replace my helmet because of a monor spill (wouln't have been so monor if I wasn't wearing that helmet
) the new helmet had better aerodynamics. My buffeting went away almost completely.
Another thing is that the buffeting comes from the air flowingUNDER the the windshield. Disturb that flow somehow and you can break up the buffeting.

Also, sometimes a toolbag mounted or Chrome Lowers can break things up.
