ok before i go and do something i wish i didn't, gonna dosyn3 in all 3 holes. am i making a big mistake or am i gonna be alright? 06 superglide with 4991 mi.
seems to be some talk about the syn3 and the trans.
HELP!
and before you flame me about the low miles, didn't ride for over a year because of the wifes cancer issues. had the bike for two months and had to put it up until we got her back into the good health.
If i was you i would do some deep research on that Syn 3. General thought is that its crap. A lot of better choices. A transmission is no place for motor oil.Gladto hear wife back on feet.
I don't think Syn3 will do you any harm in all three holes although it may not be the "best" choice for all three applications. Contrary to what many believe it's a decent product and I doubt you willfind anyone who has had any problems that can be traced back tousing Syn3. There are tens, if not hundreds,of thousands of HD bikes out there running Syn3 and I personally haven't heard of any oil related failures. Here's my own opinionregarding Syn3 - if you were selling a relatively expensiveproduct that required oil to run properly and warrantying it for 2 years or more (with extended waranties) would you knowingly sell an inferior oil that may cause problemsand cost you a small fortune in warranty repairs? Probably not.
With that said there are products that may be more suited for the intended usage. Use syn3 in your engine or any decent synthetic engine oil, use HD Formula Plus in the primary and use a good synthetic gear oil in the tranny. I don't think you'll go wrong with any name brand oil products.
I have done quite a bit of research on this prior to my engine build. My decision, and what I will be switching to after my 1000 mile breaking of the build will be the following, with reasons:
1. Engine - AMSOil Synth. Motorcycle Oil - this is a better oil for heat management and lubrication. I am currently running HD dino oil for break-in. It's cooler [sic. damn cold] out now so I'm not as concerned about heat management during break-in and you don't want to go too slick during break-in.
2. Tranny - AMSOil Sever Gear Oil - this is thicker oil for gears and should provide for smoother shifting. I had Syn3 put in when my bike was build, but I will switch in the spring once I hit 1000 on my new build.
3. Primary - HD Formula+ - You don't have the same lubrication needs in the primary as you do in the other holes, and with a high tq engine, I don't want to run synth and risk clutch slip.
That's my choices. RedLine is supposed to be good for the tranny, but the AMSOil is readily available to me.
I do think that the Syn3 is a decent choice and would be better than conventional and certainly convenient. My choices are made because I have a high-output engine build and plan on driving accordingly... example: I'm currently working on wiring up a shift light <grin>.
The thing about Syn 3 is not that it's bad oil, it's a blend that is priced higher than many good full synthetics.Motorcycle specific oils are for the most part designed for engines that use the same oil for the motor, transmission and clutch.Harleys just don't so the idea that they need a special oil is just wrong. They need a quality oil in the right weight period.I use Mobil one 15/50 in the motor and primary and mobil one 75/90 gear oil in the transmission.
I ran syn3 in all three once and it worked fine in the primary and motor, but it made the shifting clunk into a bang. It's overkill for the primary, really, but it works. Running M1 in the motor and Formula+ in the tranny and primary now with no complaints. Syn3 is fine for the motor, but as others have said, it's expensive and not even a full synthetic.
Had syn3 in all holes at 10,000 service. Within a couple of hundred miles I changed to Redline Heavy Duty Shockproof in tranny. Bike went from CLUNKtoclick. Especially in the lower gears when hot, there was a tremendous difference.
