Default Texas to Alaska

The idea popped into my head. I think I'm going to put a trip together next summer. Not sure where in Alask I will ride, but I want to try to do the run to and fro in 9 days.

I like this guy's thinking[sm=biker2.gif]

What kind of mileage are you looking at from where you are in Texas ktm_scott?

I have to say I am wanting to take a trip next year and was planning to head SW on a 1900 mile round trip, but not sure about the other guys who were "going to go." This could be a plausable trip for me here in Denver...[sm=confused06.gif]

From experience 12 hours a day in a car (actually a truck) it took 4 days to get to Anchorage. We left Washington about 7 am Yakima to be exact and I arrived in Anchorage 3pm local time on the 4th day. we did not dilly dally around either. We ate slept and drove....9 days from Texas and back again???? You better think again..... I'm not saying you can't do it or that it can't be done. But you A$$ will never have feeling again.... Let me know when you traveling maybe I might find a reason to be in AK again.

From Denver to Anchorage -
Total Est. Time: 54 hours, 30 minutes [/align] Total Est. Distance:3219.15 miles

I could be game for that...modify the route a bit...can usually shave a chunk of time from the "given route" but once you hit AK might not be such great roads to roam off from the main roads?

I got to go to Ketchikan when I was in the Navy. That was the best port I ever had. The Artic Bar was the place to just sit and drink.

Google Map Coordinates from Denver to Anchorage (copy and paste into the google maps directions)
Alaska-Stewart Hwy/HWY-37 @56.900640, -130.055290 to:HWY-97 @53.899660, -122.777450 to:US-89 @48.843260, -113.417070 to:US-93 @47.976160, -114.198870 to:Grand Loop Rd/US-191/US-287 @44.453340, -110.813260 to:CO-125 @40.915228, -106.292790 to:Big Thompson Ave/US-34 @40.381250, -105.494870

3,418mi – about 3 days 4 hours

Highlights:
Start leaving Denver area from Estes Park (through Rocky Mountain National Park)
Grand Tetons, Yellowstone WY
Glacier National Park MT
Banff National Park Canada
Jasper National Park Canada
Kluane National Park & Reserve Canada
Wrangle-St. Elias National Park A L A S KA !!!!

Now I am not one to want to hang around the "highlights" too long, just one of those "whats next" kind of guys on a trip lol. I rode solo to Minnesota in one day (800 miles), I pulled that trip off in one weekend. Left at about 10am that Thursday, returned home Sunday about 1am, left Minnesota at noon (due to a "welcome home party" that was thrown the night before by some firends haha)

One thing to note is the time frame...9 days is tough to do from Denver to Anchorage. You could do it in 8.5 if you doo 800 miles/day, but that's also not stop driving, notincluding stopping for gas, food, and lodging.

badherb - Can you lend some feedback from the road conditions up there? places to avoid/don't go too far from?

**EDIT- I forgot, I have my motivation hanging up in the apartment;

^Thats a photo from Lake Maligne in Jasper National Park.

I rode from Dallas to Deadhorse and back in 17 days (650 miles per day). You could save about 2 days if you only went as far as Fairbanks. Good luck and have fun.

I made the trip in a car, fromNebraska to Alaska(1961) andAlaska to Nebraska (1965)during a tour there in the USN. At that time, the ALCAN Hwy was 1275 miles of gravel road and would not have been a pleasant ride on a bike. I think it would be a real Iron Butt ride even today on the schedule you quoted.

No feel yet for a daily mileage. 9 days may be too aggressive though. I just left Denver yesterday. Stopped by Mile High HD. My son is in the Air Force in Aurora, so I figured I'd make Denver a stopping point on my way up.
