The only advantage other than better tensile strength is the fact that you only need to carry a master link or 2, anda good chain breaker to be able to fix a snapped chain on the road. That will get you to the next Auto orIndustrial supply store.A broken belt means a tow job and expensive R&R to fix.
Chainsdo wear faster and make a mess but I guess I'm old school, I like a chain.
I have done this to my 01 FXDL..not sure what year your bike is.......including in my parts list were a 8 1/2 inch rear fender...18 x 5.5 rear wheel........matching 52T rear sprocket....200mm tire.......Baker 23T 0.9 offset trans sprocket......530 Chain.......for the 01 FXDL the rear fender struts were cut and rewelded outboard for 8 1/2 fender......did a friends and we used a technique to bend the struts for fender fitment rather that cut/reweld......if you have to change rear fenders then one thing to consider is how the replacement fender will fit forward at the frame.....since I also extended the swingarm by 2 in, minimal modification was required and would also depend on what type of replacement fender (length) used.........I personally like the look of a chain on a motorbike and I also did this for performance reasons as the motor has been tricked........with the new chains, maintainance is minimal and alittle chain wax goes along way.........the baker trans sprocket cost more but it is steel and it will not need frequent replacement..........
Thanks Buzzard .. that's awesome. I love the look of your bike. You gave me a good heads up .. good lookin' out on that. As far as year .. I have an 06. I'll have to do some reasearch and contact Baker and see what all I've got to get and order it. To me, it will be well worth it whether I'm back stepping or not just because I like the look. Hell, I'm the one that rides it, right? lol That's all that matters. Here's a pic of my bike for ya since you were kind enough to share yours.
and thats what i gave him . i have had chains i know what they will do.plus if you are going down the road at a good clip and the chain breaks . it can wipe out a side case.not trying to be a dick either just information.
I think its zimmers or zimmermans...cant remember...couldnt find it bookmarked....if you dont find it...hit me back up and ill dig out a reciept................they have got the whole kit...correct spacing...they use rk chains and pbi sprockets...good stuff....they can help you out on gear ratios...stay stock, or do somthing a little different...........Good luck to you.......I say go for it.........dont let these bums talk you out of it..........LOLIFE...................
http://www.zippersperformance.com/..........is this the site your were thinking of lolife.........quality products...............never have broke a chain.......broke a belt or two but that usually came after some serious abuse...........been drag racing bikes with the new chains and have not had a failure to date and they see plenty of chances to break...........below a 95ci 147hp/130tq dyna with 10.50s in the 1/4.......no chain issues
Well, I deleted the " why I love my belt drive " dribble and checked the zippers listings, but saw nothing for the 6 speed conversion. I've seached and checked other forums, but never actually seen a 6 speed with a chain. Obviously it could be custom made, but geeeez I wish someone would chime in and help with part numbers or a supplier. It's probably only a spacer and 2 cogs.
