Okay before I get the Oh geezus, not another windshield thread, I'm not going to ask anyone to post pictures, check measurements, bitch about buffeting, how tall, etc their shield is. And yes, I've done the mandatory pre-post search and haven't found any threads addressing what I'm looking to find out.
What I'm interested in is any thoughts on quality and fit of the shields from Memphis Shades, HD and National Cycle. Every one of them has a different system, material, thickness, coating, etc. This is not going to be a permanent installation on the bike, so I'm more interested in how these things hold up and actually work than what they look like. If I was interested in a beauty part, I'd leave the w/s off altogether. I have a couple of long trips planned for 2008 and if I can save a little wear and tear on a long ride to/from it would be a good thing.
Memphis seems to have a lot of choices and they look pretty good, HD is a no brainer for fit, but National Cycle claims their 4 mm polycarbonate shields are better than the other manufacturer's lexan shields. Just a quick response with anyone's actual experience would be appreciated.
I have the Memphis slim andlike it much better then the others i have tried and for a little less then 200 bucksit works out good for me. Hangs on the garage wall most of the time but handy when it's needed as it takes just a couple seconds to slap it on. Good Luck!
If all you want is wind protection a few times a year, buy one off eBay. The older stlye HD detachables go pretty cheap & it's no big deal to remove the clamps when you're back in town. I have the standard one, but still need to cut it down a couple of inches - top hits me right above the eyebrows; makes night riding a bit surreal, if not downright dangerous.
I have the Harley short, detachable on my Wide Glide and I like it for the most part. It leaves hardware on the bike when you pull it off, but it's not too noticeable. I am inclined to try a Memphis Shades product though, for a couple of reasons: the Harley windsheild takes the wind off my chest, but lets it hit me in the face, which I like. The problem is it hits me square in the eyes. I don't care if wind hits me in the face, I just want something to take the wind off my chest so I don't have to spend the whole ride trying to hang on. Getting old I guess...
The other reason is buffeting: the Harley windsheild buffets for me, but that may be a combination of my height, weight, etc. I am thinking another windsheild might look a little slimmer, keep the wind off my chest and not blast a hurricane straight at my eyes...kind of an expensive experiment though.
Not sure if you can see my windshield in the picture of my bike.
I ordered the windshield when I bought my bike from the
H-D dealership. If I remember correctly it was like $500. A
quick detach model, very nice.
I really likemy windshield. When I picked up the bike I had to
ride it back home about 700 miles in cold and windy conditions.
I would recommend a windshield.
When I look at the picture of my bike you can't even
see the windshield. And I was about 10 feet from the
bike when I took the picture.
The windshield keeps the wind off my chest and the wind is
hitting the top of my helmet. I'am not getting hit in the eyes
at all. I'am about 6 feet tall and about 235 pounds.

RE: Dyna Windshields
Yes, the touring model is slightly wider, but not much when compared to the QD standard. The pic in the fat book says compact, you need to read the description and ask for "standard height" to get the full size windshield. No docking hardware goes on the bike at all, on or off in 30 seconds.
My only complaint is that it can be stolen and mounted on another Dyna in less than a minute. I'd like to find a way to "lock" it to the bike.
