Just went out to spray my bike with some oil to protect it from the salt and there is visible rust and pitting already after riding it two days ago and hosing it off afterwards ... that **** is nasty !
The pitting is not too bad but a little too much for brasso ... was going to use some fine wirewool to polish it out with before brasso/metal polish finishing
The front wheel had visible rust in the rim which surprised me ... the chrome should be better than that shouldn't it ??
Any suggestions for protecting better and for sorting out the marks ?
I don't want to just park my bike this time of year but part of me thinks maybe I should just get a cheap Honda ratbike to ride at this time of year ... and not worry about the damage
If you can find it over there, use Simple Green and Never Dull.
I had a similar issue with my rocker covers and rims early this spring. Colorado DOT uses a Magnesium Chloride mix to de-ice our roads in the winter and that stuff is harsh on the metal. I sprayed the motor and wheels down with some Simple Green, let it soak for about 4-5 minutes then spray it off with a pressure washer (car wash), after that I spent a better part of a day using the Never Dull to polish everything up again. My dealer said I took off the clear coat on the stuff by doing this but would be just fine as long as I polished those parts to maintain the finish.
The salt they use at least in our area has some sort of crap in it to help it stick to the surface. The surface now after three weeks has a "wet" sheen to it and its as slippery as hell. Personally i can,t wait for it to **** with rain to wash it all off so i can get out for a ride.Your second bike idea is probably a wise move at least while the salt is out.
We have so much salt on the roads here, that I just can't bring myself to ride. Had a day or so and I thought about a quick ride, but I didn't. Today, tonight more white stuff predicted, so that means more salt. Kinda open just a good rain to clean the roads up a bit.
