I noticed after a ride one day that I had brake fluid dripping from my reservoir and it has splattered on just about everything around it (thankfully it didn't get on my tank long enough to damage the paint). I did a search on the forum to see if this was a common problem. Turns out that some did this. I loosened the reservoir top and re-tightened (not too tight as recommended) and actually forgot about it. A while later I noticed it was again doing this and it has begun to peel the paint off of the lever housing and reservoir. My buddy recommended that I bring it in to the Harley shop to see if it was under warranty......I decided against it and used it as an excuse to get the chrome switch kit (all of it) and replace both sides.
After receiving the kit (which I ordered from Chicago Harley Davidson) I was having second thoughts on my decision because it looked kind of complicated to install. Just to see how much the dealership would charge I went by and talked to a tech and he said it was complicated and that they would do it for $200.00.
I was indeed going to let them do it, but the same buddy who said check to see if it was warranted convinced me that we cound do it!
It was complicated.....but we did and did it right. It took us 3 Saturdays and after that first one I was thinking...."that $200 sounds like a bargain about right now" I ended up replacing the throttle and idle cables along with the front brake line with the diamond back cable just because we had the whole thing tore apart to begin with.
Looks good and I am pleased......now what to dowith that $200 bucks I saved?!?
Wow, I had no idea a chrome switch housing kit was that hard to install. I think I may remove that from my list of "I wants". I kind of like it like it is anyway since my bike is black I like having some black to compliment the chrome anywhere I can. Appreciate the info. I was under the impression those things just bolted right over the top of the black housing using 2 pieces.
By the way, how did this fix your fluid leak issue? It didn't just cover it up did it? Or did it just cover up the damage and you fixed the leak by reseating the gasket? I seem to have this issue on and off. I think when I had my bars installed they screwed the cylinder top down too tight. I either have a small slow leak or it only does it now and then.
I did the chrome caps and the whole nine yards with the levers and lever housing...the hard part was 1) cutting and soldering the blinker wires 2) getting all those wires back into the switch housing properly so they wouldn't bind up. 3) getting it all put back into the exact same spot on the handlebars and also getting the brake switch and clutch switch in properly.
In fact, after we got all the wires back in and put it all back together the blinkers wouldn't work! After blowing around 7 fuses we figured out which wires it was and come to find out we had bound them up so bad the wires came through and were grounding out on the switch housing!
By the way,I think the fluid issue was a bad gasket!!!!
It's an 05 that had 2k on it when I bought it in November and now has 4400 on it 2 months later.
I put more miles on it in two months than previous owner in two years.
I bought it to ride for sure!
They changed the superglide in 06 so don't quote me, but, I believe we pretty much do have the same bike other than year and a few small details.
A common cause of leaky Mcyl is the bladder developes a pin hole which leaks out the small bleader hole in the cover plate. Mine started leaking while on a trip. Stopped at a gas station and bought a condom. Removed the cover, stretched it over the resevoir so the "tip" was centered then screwed the cover back on good and trimmed the excess.Hadn't lost enough fluid to be a problem.
I'm still running with that condom on there after 3 yrs.[sm=smiley20.gif]
