90% show - some claim they help with braking as the brake fluid, in theory, can't expand the cable and all the pressure goes to the brake capilers. I've never seen much difference in this respect myself.

Brake lines yes, cables 100% show, no performance improvement. Although most are covered with a vinyl coating, if it wears thru the braid will wear the hell out of paint and chrome.

'08 models now have 'braided cabels' wrapped in black vinyl.
Those diamond back things are an exterior braid for looks, I'm sure the exterior wears better than the vinyl. I would think the inside would wear =. ?
