Planning a 16" ape install in the next couple of weeks. I really like the look of the Chubby's, but not sure of the 12.5 inch pull back. I'm 6' 4" with pretty good reach. Should I look for a bar with say, an 8.5 inch pull back? I want to be able to extend my arms, but not have to lean forward to do so.
None of the bike shops in my area stock apes to try out, so I'm hoping to get it right from the wisdom of the ape rider's on this forum.
Any tall rider's want to chime in on their experience with pullback do's and dont's from their ape installs?
Good point Trotter! Only problem is, I work nights. Saw some on a bike like mine one Saturday morning at the stealer, but didn't have the ***** to ask the owner to sit on it.
I'm in the same boat - 6'5" and a long reach - been looking for apes with limited pullback for a while now - no luck.
Most have at least 12" of pull back which seems excessive to me. Bar changes are expensive and time consuming if other cables need changing.
I don't know how to figure this out without making several $200 mistakes before it's right?
I'll follow this thread to see if you figure it out - sorry I couldn't help.
I would say ask to sit on peoples bikes most are ok with that even proud you would ask other than that keep looking a shops most all here in cali. have apes so I just ask to take them out and try never had any body say no...
I have 14" chubbies on mine....I like the pullback because it allowed me to push the bars farther forward. I like the look of the bars pushed up and can do it with these and still have a comfortable sitting position.
I've got Ă1.0", 16" rise & 7" pullback apes. I'm 5'-11" with longish arms. I really like my bars. They are positioned so they are just short of being vertical which keeps me sitting upright. If you want to see pics I posted some a week or so ago in the "Let's see them Dynas" sticky at the top of the forum section. https://www.hdforums.com/m_193640/tm.htm

The beauty of apes is that you can push forward if the pullback is too much, or pull them closer if it's not enough. I ahve mine pushed pretty far forward. I say still get the chubbies. Youa re overthinking this issue. Yes, bar changes are expensive but once you get the bars on you will see how many options you ahve with the apes by loosening the clamp and moving them a little.
I DONT THINK THE PULL BACK WILL BE AN ISSUE FOR YOU GUYS IM 5'9" AND MY REACH AINT SHORT AND I HAVE THE 12.5" PULLBACK ON MY CHUBBIES AND MY BARS ARE PUSHED FORWARD JUST A HAIR FROM BEING INLINE WITH MY FORKS
