Default Performance Upgrade, need your advice

I’m ready to take the plunge on my 2000 fxd stock pipes, slash cut cycle shack slip ons, 1550 cc. and S&S Super E carb which I’m going to keep on the bike. I’ve been racking my brain trying to decide the best option for this upgrade. I’m looking for the best combination that will give me good low through mid range torque and good horsepower numbers. I would like to see both torque and horsepower reading above 100. I’ve narrowed things to three options that fit my budget but I seemed to have stalled a this point. I’m hoping to get advice from this forum to guide me in the best direction, especially from anyone who has used these SE heads or has an opinion of the shop’s set-ups or quality of their work.
Thank you in advance
Bob

Option 1: SE HTCC Ported Heads, intake valves 2.0”, exhaust valves 1.623”, HTCC forged pistons, Adjustable Map Ignition System, Woods TW6HG .590 lift gear driven cam. (duration 240/240)

Option 2: Stock heads sent to Gerolamy, port and polished, valves 1.90 Intake ,1.570 exhaust , spring upgrade kit to allow for Woods TW6HG cam. Weld chambers to 10.5 compression with forged flat tops , Adjustable Map Ignition.

Option 3: Stock heads sent to Branch Flowmetrics, port, polish, springs, etc. reshape combustion chambers, intake valves 1 5/16, exhaust valves 1 5/8. JE high compression pistons, Woods TW6HG cam, Adjustable Map Ignition.

My best advice is to find an engine builder you're comfortable with, discuss what you're expectations are and how you normally ride your bike. When I had my 95" build done, I did a lot of research also, but did not go in with a pre-made list of parts, although I did have an idea of what I'd like to have. Not much sense in getting a drag bike if you do all highway riding, and by the same token, no sense in getting a build for a highway cruising and occasional freeway flying if you don't intend to leave town or just go bar hopping.

Keep a budget in mind, see what parts you can work with that you already have and listen to the options presented. I was all set to go with the Harley HTTC heads, when I found out that the best thing for my particular circumstances was to have the stock heads reworked. Very pleased with the results and still have a great performer and very reliable ride.

i have the whole branch package : heads pistons branch grind andrews cams s&s gear drive I lift the front end when I hit 3rd gear which ever way you go a balanced package will work better than A piece here and a piece there .wether you go 95 or 98 you will realize the potential of your parts if they are matched to each other

Steve is right. Mixing and matching your combo is for people with a lot of time and money for R&D. For the rest of us, go with a proven package that meets your needs. Branch, S&S, Edelbrock, whatever. But pick a package and go with that.

Hey This may or may not help, but check out the articles in American Iron mag by Donnie Peterson. It's all about Twin Cam performance. Part 1 is in the Dec '05 issue and parts 2 & 3 are in Jan/Feb '06 issues. Really good info on how to get the most performance out of our TC 88.

Thanks Dglide, fxdxsteve and bobcowan for the very good advice. I’m going to re-think this project and get on the phone with some engine builders and find out what works best with what I’ve got. I’ve got one shot at this and its got to be right. I’m starting to realize it cost about the same to put together the wrong components as it does to build an engine with parts which complement one another. Since I’m currently using a Super E carburetor maybe an S&S package is the way to go. Or it may be closer to my budget to shelve the carburetor and go with a package like the complete Branch set up. I like the thought of lifting the front wheel in third gear. I’ll have to do some number crunching.

Dexo54, thanks for the tip about the magazine article. Hope I can find it online, if not its probably time to get a subscription American Iron. Again, thanks to all for responding.
