Just wondering which cams you guys are using on your street bobs & is it really worth it to switch over to the gear drive system instead of the chain drive. Any real big differences besides a lot more money.

i won't be swithcing to gear drive cams when i do my scheduled 103 build coming up in the next couple weeks. from what i've gathered, those cam chain issues have been resolved in at least the 2008 models.

fwiw, i am going with se 258 cams in my fxdf

in a stock motor I'd use a short cam like andrews 26 or se204...I agree with hmmr, gear drive is unnecessary on 06 and later dynas

Ive gone to gear drive on my 05, its just peace of mind for me.

ive tried S&S .570s Andrews 37s, Kurakyn wild things, but I liked the HQ Firestorms the best!

broadest power range and awsome torque.

Might try Woods one day, I heard there pretty hard to beat.

they may have cured the problem but you still have a part that is supposed to wear out chain and tensioners plus the extra drag gear drive is the only way to go and the cost os not that much more I use the ss510 myself and lovethem more power more torgue . never have to think out the cams again.. the Twin Cam had a problem with the cam chain gear sprocket bolts.

The key in the big gear only had about 20% engagement in the shaft.

Harley finally did away with this design and replaced it with a splined shaft and gear, which solved this problem.

nevertheless, cam chains wear down and should be checked every 10k miles

Not only are gear driven cams not necessary on the new models (96"), I consider them highly undesirable. There appears to be enough potential for crank problems and excessive pinion runout that the gears may eat the cam cavity. The chain setup is more forgiving. At least, that’s my opinion.

there's a lot of tc motors juiced up with aftermarket chain driven cams that are poking around just fine

Thanks for all the help guys. I'm kinda leaning toward the HQ cams for me.

Thinking about just going with the chain driven cams but can't really make up my mind between these 3.

HQ-TC-500-HC (Hurricane), Woods TW-6-6 or maybe an Andrews 54H (New for 08)

Not sure if I'll do it yet when I change the cams, but I'd like to have my stock cylinders bored & change pistons to make it a 103 & possibly port & polish the heads on it. Decisions....Decisions.....lol Can't decide on this motor work or changing wheels & a few other cosmetic parts for this winter downtime.
