Sooe New Zealand?
Any way this is the gist:
Had a kid that chased an exchange student down there and married her. He lives ib Christchurch now. As I see you do. Mama wants me to go there next Feburary or so. They just went back last week from a visit here. Thinking of sending either my bob, the kids sporty, that used to be mine, the wing, or get another sporty and leave it there. This I would do next December or so.
Some have said that to send a bike there I might have trouble as they would not let me ride it there. Would be there 2 weeks. Do you know of any problems doing this? Rideing a bike from stes there for two weeks.
I feel my main prob would be the opposite side driving there and the one lane bridges. (Would not do it for a day or so to get used to the ways.) Do want to explore NZ and hit the north island also. (Mama hatres boats but said she would do it to go there.)
Could a bike be still licenced here in the states and rode over there for a while? Insurence? Helmets do not bother me anymore. (Age thingy.) Would like to maybe buy an older sporty here, get it running right, of course kid kinda wants to go bigger already, then maybe sell it there when done. Know of any problems doing this?
Thanks.

As far as shipping a bike to and from the US. I have friends who have done that several times, the last time was the 100th Anniversary and now a bunch of us are planning to do the 2008 Sturgis Rally and to ride Route 66. We do not see any problems with shipping, just go to your local Harley Dealer and ask them to save you one of the shipping crates. The downside is that you are without the scoot for about a month before and after the trip!!
Provided you have a valid drivers licence, I see no reason why you couldn't ride your bike here - plenty of other visitors do. I did a quick check for you and domestic US bikes meet all the requirements under New Zealand legislation. The only thing for me is the cost if you are only here two weeks - it may actually be cheaper for you to rent a bike, unless you want to leave it in NZ for your son. Our local HD dealer has excellent rentals and if you want, I can make some enquires to obtain local rates. You could also pick up a second-hand bike and then resell it when you were done.
Yep, we do drive on the left side, but it is easy, I have been doing it for years
. As for one-lane bridges, I think your son is trying to scare you, there must be only a handful of those in the whole country and then in remote places. I suppose he told you that he actually found one or two roads that were not just mud tracks, LOL. Seriously, it is beautiful to ride here, especially February (our summer) in the South Island with nice balmy temperatures and the worlds most spectacular scenery, eg yesterday was 28C (83F) with not a cloud in the sky!
Bill, I am more than happy to look into things for you if you want, but lets take that off-line. If I can help or you have any questions, please drop me a private email.
In fact, this is an open invitation, if anyone else is thinking of coming to New Zealand (whether planning a ride or not) and want to know more, contact me via private email or PM.
