I have a 1998 Super Glide with 12k miles. I have been using Harley oil since new. I heard Amsoil was a better oil to use. Anyone use this oil,and is it a better oil? Also, which oil is better in the tranny,20w50 or 75w90 gear lube? Thanks for any advice.
I started using Amsoil at my first oil change. Dont remember which weight i used in the tranny. You pretty much can't go wrong with any of the synthetics nowadays, but I've had past experience with Amsoil and decided it was the brand I was gonna use.
I really don't know if it runs any cooler or quieter. I think all of that is in peoples heads unless they have actually done some sort of testing using db meters and infrared thermometers. Can the average person really tell a difference between 240deg and 230deg without some sort of instrument that tells them otherwise? In my experience anytime someone buys a product they will believe it to be the best until proven otherwise. I can still hear valvetrain ticking and I know it still runs rather hot on a summer day at a stoplight.
With that being said, someone will come on here and tell you that Amsoil is $hit and you should use Mobil1, or Royal Purple, or whatever. Just know that whatever high quality, brand name oil you choose to use, it will more than likely be a better oil than that of the lowest bidder that H-D chose to use in its bottles this year.
switched to Mobil One V-Twin, a 100% Syn Oil (others don't tell ya that and it can be any percentage of fossil oil to Syn Oil), also running it in primary... for tranny switched to Redline Heavy Syn Gear Oil...since making thesechanges no more silvery gook on the oil plug magnets, and the tranny is running as smooth as my old metric... still running H-D oil filter, still sorting through all those recommendations..
