Only one thing to add, There are a lot of New Material Jackets out there that are good for hot weather riding, they come with built in crash pads on the shoulders and elbows, and back support. Also look at getting a pair of Kevlar lined Denims, just a precaution incase you do lay it down, better to just have a few bruises than open Roasties, Good luck,
Note:
If you do have a new bike it should come with an alarm system and immobiliser, so that should help with the security,  \\;

[sm=americanasmiley.gif]I echo most everything you have been told. Long trips I always try to wear my leathers, just flat azz better protection against the elements and other road hazards. I am taking a 2,000 mile round trip at the end of September, first part of October. I can't wait..........been on numerous long trip before! [sm=americanasmiley.gif]
They covered everything I can think of. What a great forum this is. . I had planned to take a 2600 mile ride this summer and I asked a similar question to yours. When I did a couple of test rides I found that I had to adjust my plans. The test rides showed that for me: * The first 100 miles were exhilarating * The second 100 miles were fun * The third 100 miles were work * The fourth 100 miles were hell * The fifth 100 didn't happen. . My problem was mostly the seat, and a little the bike's fit. . I changed my long trip to a series of day trips and got a lot of riding in. I still had fun. Before next year I will address the fit issue and get a Corbin or Mustang seat. I am really glad I did not try the full trip without the test trips.
500 miles in a day is definitely do-able. \\; The most I have ever done in a day \\;was 850 and the last 150 were very difficult. \\; All of the suggestions are great! \\; I would add these two points: \\; Take breaks when you need them, don't go too long if you feel you need one. \\; Fatigue causes inattention. And get some ear protection ( I use the foamy ones you put inside your ears). \\; I could barely sleep after my first \\;long trip because my ears were ringing. \\; Have fun and good luck.
Ditto on what others said. Earplugs if you want to hear after a long days riding. Ground floor is a must, some have pulled their bikes into the room with them. Better seat for the long runs. I have a Mustang with backrest and love it. But most of all enjoy the ride.
I've got 63,000 + on my Road King and at least 250,000 on the rest of the rides. \\; All the poop given is good stuff. \\; If you don't have a seat with a back rest, pack the pillion so that you can lean back and provide relief to your back, buttocks, and occasionally just straighten out your legs and lean back against the back rest. \\; It provides tons of relief for long hauls. \\; And WEAR EAR PLUGS. \\; Not only to protect your ears, but to provide wind noise reduction. \\; Your brain will thank you at the end of the day, and you won't be nearly as tired. \\; Not sure how that works, but trust me on this one, IT WORKS!! \\; Ask any Iron BUTT RIDER.... \\; \\; Hope this helps, CCRyder
