Let me apologize in advance if this is a beat up subject. I am pretty new to wrenching on my 08 SG. I am looking to put forward controls on. Dealers want arm and a leg for labor. Is this a mod I can do myself with little knowledge or is it better to trust the dealer for this? Thanks for any help!
IMO...if you don't know much about working on stuff, I would let the dealer do it. I don't know if you plan on just cutting the shifter shaft off, or removing the primary to get it out, but either way, I think it would be best to let the dealer do it.....again, my opinion only!
Well, if you can change a tire, or have any mechaincal ability at all, you should not have a problem if you use the H-D forward control kit.
I used it on my '05 and it took about an hour to do with Coke and cigarette breaks included.
It is pretty straight forward. The mid controls come off and the forwards go on in the frame bosses already welded on the front of the frame. Th H-D kit is all inclusive and has very good detailed instructions.
Pretty easy to do, and you do not really need to remove the shifter shaft from the primary. I used a bracket from the pre05 kit with a home made spacer and just bolted the old shift shaft to the center case bolt. Go for it...
Thank you for all the help. I will give it a shot. I thought I could get through it was just alittle worried about the shift linkage and the hole that would be left over.
I was just told that on the 08 model, that it is alittle more complicated because you have to remove the primary and clutch. is this true?? Please someone that has down this mod to their 08 Would greatly appreciate help. Also will the 05 kit work?

That's what the dealer will do. That's why it's so expensive.
Shadetree guys just cut off the old shaft. There's been a few write-ups about it here, but the search is broken.
