So I went ahead and bought some Thunderheaders for my FXD. I'm currently looking for a fuelpack or Powercommander. But my question has more to do with the High Flow - I see that they sell them usually as a full kit that includes the cover. I actually like the stock cover on mine and don't want to spend an extra 50$ for an Arlen Ness one or a K&N. Can I just buy a high flow that fits the stock casing or do I need to spend more to buy the full casing? Thanks.
Will do, thanks. I'm mostly just looking for the best deal I can get on something like that. The cheapest thing I've seen is the Arlen Ness one from gopartsdirect for about a hundred bucks.
I'm pretty sure that a stock "football" cover will work with the Ness Big Sucker. I wouldn't recommend a Fuelpak with a Thunderheader, V&H only has settings for their pipes. You'll be much better off with a Power Commander. If you're going to stay at Stage 1 then a DFO/TFI is an option too. Check Eastern Performance (a site sponsor) too for the Ness BS, their prices and service are hard to beat!

I had a DFO and my bike ran like crap with the Thunderheader and SE air cleaner.I switched it out for a SERT and had it tuned on a dyno and the difference is like night and day.
The AN BS stage one will fit under the stock cover, at least for the '07s and earlier. Haven't heard about the '08s since they changed the AC and cover.
It's not that I particularly want the stock cover so much as that I figured I could find something cheaper if I didn't pay for another one. Also, how much does a dyno tune usually run for? I've never had it done.
i've got a K&N air filter and it fits with the stock cover, dont recall the part number though. But since all other guys here have mentioned some about air filter, i just wanna comment on the pic. may be this is out of the topic...
is that your bike? nice pic. photographer?
You need the entire kit to get true stage 1 flow. It's not just the filter. The stage 1 kits let more air into the filter to begin with. However, the K&N, Screamin Eagle, and Arlen Ness kits all allow you to put the stock football cover back on over the filter (unless you have the newer 08 style cover - I'm not sure about that one). I have the ness kit and it explicitely said in the instructions to reinstall the stock a/c cover. I didn't do it, but it said you could. And I have a friend with the SE kit and he runs his stock a/c cover over his. It will stick out just a bit further and there will be no backing plate for it to line up with but that's not a problem.
