I'm the proud new owner of an '01 FXDXT that I picked up with less than 6300 miles on it. So far, so good - love the bike! One change I'd like to make though is the saddlebags. I've looked around and everything I've come across, almost constantly, says "Some Style Bag Here (Except FXDXT)" or, specifically say '02 models and up. So, my question is this:
What is so much different between the strut towers, height, etc between a 2001 and 2002/3 FXDXT that would keep a set of bags from fitting my '01??
What I'm hoping to do as an alternative is find a ratted out set of FXDXT factory bags, and then use the frame that snaps into place on the struts/fender to mount to a newer set. Dang things are hard as all get out to find though.
When I was shopping for my FXDXT, I noticed that,too...there's a difference in the back end between '01 and '02. Some stuff fits but a lot dosen't. I know the '02 has a different swingarm #, but an aftermarket swingarm fits up to '05...I was looking for an '01 or '02 'cause I bought it intending to do substantial engine mods and wanted the timkin drive side bearing. All that said; it took me six months to find a clean low mile FXDXT and it was an '01 1000 miles away. Now the transformation is pretty well complete.
I'll try and slip into the back of the local HD shop in the next day or so and look in the parts book and see what #'s are different. I believe '02s had a bigger rear tire, different fender and swingarm pn's. I got a set of discontinued saddlebags ("Latigo" model, I believe) for my buddies FXDWG and they weren't supposed to fit; all we had to do is bend the bracket a bit to fit the strut mounts. Hope you enjoy your T-Sport 1/2 as much as I do mine...best HD made for ME! Here's before we stripped it to the bare frame and opened the cases and after pics:
Thanks for the response. Were you able to get into the shop and do a comparison against model years? I'm dying to know if there's something so much different.
Was in the "shop" today (work is real busy for me this time of year) and here's the breakdown of changes from '01 to '02 on the Dynas; suffix indicates year of part introduction:
The tech's in the shop were of the opinion that the major change affecting saddlebag fitment is that some saddlebags (not all, oviously as some fit 2000 - 2005) use the passenger footrest as an anchor point and that may be the main fitment problem. As you can see by the part number suffix's the strut covers are the same, so the strut mounting bolts would have the same spacing.
I just did a search and came up with this thread. My son has an 03 fxdl and bought a set of bags from an 01 fxdxt. Does anyone know of any issues I may have installing these? I see where it was said the fender changed in 02.
How about as far as installing a reinforcement bracket inside the fender to accomodate the quick release pins that bolt on the fender? Thanks for any advice.
Nice! Not too many people have a FXDXT or even know what one is! lol! I've got a '01 and have owned it since '05. We've put 40k on it and it still runs like a dream and handles great. Oakerz, I don't know why you would ever want to put different bags on. I get nothing but compliments on mine and where did you get them? I did put on a HD concho to go with the looks of the rest of the bike, but man I wouldn't change them for anything! The expandable feature is something no other bags have! Enjoy!
Nice to see an FXDXT thread, even if it's a re-cycled one...getting serious cabin fever up here in the frigid north...should turn up the garage heat a bit and go out and work on the bikes tonight; that'd help. Trips are already being planned.....
