I'm the worst motorcycle gas filler of all time. I always spill. I suck.

ORIGINAL: baxter

those collars are a pain in the *** cus you gotta hold the nossle out of the tank alil more to avoid the automatic shutoff. your not alone and im glad im not either lol.. i have an 06 FXDB, not the bike its the stupid nossles
I agree with that! I take a wad (Ya, I said wad!) of gas station paper towels and wrap them around the opening of the tank while I hold the nozzle just barely in the tank and it will usually shut off just about full and catches any spillage! That’s if the gas station remembers to fill the holder of paper towels!!!! Not the bike….just more EPA bullchit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've only done it a few times, but have faith that the gas will stop flowing when it hits the check valve in the nozzle. Keep it buried in the tank and it will stop without splashing out.

I of course never trust it to work and end up eyeballing it the whole time....ironically the only time I spilled gas on the tank last year was the LAST fill up for the winter. Go figure.

I always look for the paper towel dispenser
I then shake it to get rid of dust and fibres, then I scrunch it up around the filler and fill up.
It also makes a handy catcher when you remove the nozzle so no petrol spills on your paint.
I can fill it right up to just above the insert but I always use a shaken paper towel

never had a problem filling my gas tank but then again I do ride
a SOFTAIL.. you said yourself that filling your SOFTAIL you never had a problem ..
my suggestion is go back to the SOFTAIL and get rid of the problem or just fill the
SOFTAIL then go home and syphen the gas out and put it in your other bike. repeat as needed.

First thing I do when hitting the pumps is go over and grab a couple of those paper towels most stations have for cleaning your windows with. I use it to cover the nozzle as I work it into the tank because it seems there is always some leftover gas in there just waiting to run out all over your tank. I also never fill it too full so I don't get the splatters everywhere but, in case I do, I've got the nozzle in one hand and the towels in another. Then as I pull the nozzle out of the tank, I again cover it with the towels to keep the extra from spilling out. Not an exact science but usually works pretty well. I find it also helpful to not try and carry on a conversation while filling up and, as hard as it is, not look around at any honeys while I'm gassing up either.

+1 to picking stations that have "friendly" pumps....easy to move collar, the lever actually controls the flow.

But I also tend to have a drop or tow (or three or four) on the SB. I hate the harley tanks with the lip thingy inside so only the nozzle fits. My other two bikes have no such thing and the opening is a normal size. And it's clean and easy to top off.
