I just got a 97 lowrider. On the frame it says fxdl/fxds conv.
What exactly does the conversion mean? Also, what is the best way to start it? It is my first Harley. Some say to gas it, some say choke, some say neither. Anyone else on here have a 97 Lowrider?
For a carb bike, you should turn the gas on, give it 2-3 wide open throttle twists. Full choke on, then hit the start. She should fire right up.Oncethe engine is up to speed, youcan start backing down the choke and even ride it on 1/2 choke. Aftera short ride 1/2 mile?, shut the choke off all the way (dont forget,or you will foul plugs)Once warm, you just have to hit the start button.
Conv means "Convertible", as in bar hopper/cruising/touring. There are saddlebags available for it specifically - usually can find them on ebay for around $200.00
Don't know about a '97, but with the 02 carbed bike, you pull out the choke/enrichner all the way and crank it - don't touch the throttle or it will flood. How long you leave it out before going to half, then closed depends on how warm the engine gets and how fast. Mine is cold blooded due to the 2-1 pipes and Mikuni carb which is a littlebigger than the original CV.
Yeah, mine is the same way....it depends on your bike. If I push mine in too soon it starts jerkin around. I have the Pro Pipe with the stock AC and jets so it's my own fault!! Just feel it out
I had a '95 Conv. Great bike. Basicly a Low Rider with detatchable bags and windshield from the factory. Just be aware that many parts are specific to that model. Got any pics??
My rule of thumb on my past 3 bikes are to turn the fuel on (you should have a vacuum petcock and its not totally nescesary to shut it off each time) wrap the throttle twice, pull out the choke and hit the starter button. Should fire up quickly depending on how long its set. Once its running, I start pushing the choke in. I dont want it out any longer than needed. I let it idle until the rocker covers start to get warm, then ride.....
I just bought a 98 lowrider a month ago and its real cold natured. Its also my first Harley and living in D/FW Texas, you would think it came from up north because it takes forever to warm up and idle right. I agree with the other guys in running the choke as long as you have to and to more you ride it the better feel you get for what it likes. I have already put 1500 miles on mine and love it more every mile I put on it. Of course the 44 miles a day round trip to work has helped rack up the miles. I'm just like you tryin to learn all I can about it so hang in there and ride all you can.
