Hey guys, I'm in the military and will be transferring to Sicily in July. It gets well into the 100's there during the summer months. I was thinking that it would be a good idea to put an oil cooler on the bike. What do you guys think ??
Good Idea. It can only help on a air cooled engine. It will also increase your oil capacity and help give your engine a longer life. After you in stall it change your oil and just put the normal amount of oil in that you have been. Then get the bike warmed up so that the cooler thermostat opens and flows thru the cooler, you can tell by touching the tanks on the end of the cooler they will warm up. Then shut it down and check oil level and add oil to the full level and you will know your new oil capacity. Should be about a 1/4 of quart or so.
I have the JAGG units that mount on the left down tube and the oil filter adapter has a thermostat in, supposed to open at 180 degrees oil temp. May want to invest in some Mobil 1 20w50 synthetic "V-Twin" . I am assuming your are going to Sigonella? If so may the NEX system can order a case of it for you or a flight crew could pick some up over in Naples when they fly over there. Have fun and thanks for serving.
Thanks for the replies guys. Yes, I'm going to Sigonella. It is the second time I've been over there and we liked it there. I'm going to get oil coolers for my bike as well as my wifes Nightster. I figured it can't hurt and why not protect my bikes from the heat.
I live in AZ and ride in 100 plus all summer, first year didn't have cooler and everytime in traffic, bike went into chugging mode to help cool down. Put HD oil cooler on 2nd year and didn't have any problems since, bike was able to run cooler so had a little more time when in traffic before would notice and made it a lot better to ride in heat. HD has 180 thermostat to help in warmup, however did notice in cold weather, it took a few more minutes to warm up before taking off.
thanks for serving. oil cooler definitely good investment. have a great time in Italy and do 'see' the country, don't just 'observe' - from an old service guy.

I feel differently about oil coolers for these bikes than most. The oil cooler relies (mostly) on airflow to cool the oil which only comes when moving. Arguably there might be a very very small difference when standing still, but the few ounces moving through the cooler when going slow or stopped wont matter much at all to the other 2.75 quarts.
While you are moving fast enough to make any difference at all, the engine will get enough cooling from the design of the fins and other heat sink elements of the engine.
Sure there is some heat exchange at all times, but so negligible when standing still or creeping that I doubt it will make much difference.
Then, the added points of failure added to the whole system by a few more connections and plumbing reduces the failure probability when you least expect it.
I have one on my 06 Bob. I added it after doing some performance engine mods. I don't know how it will work on a stockengine, but my bike still heats up enough to chug. I'm sure it helps a lot but sitting in traffic in the middle of summer, it still gets hot. I would do the whole thing over again even though it still heats up. There are some other things to consider however. You cannotuse the factory oil cooler and also use the factory chin spoiler, or the reusable oil filter sustem. I wanted the reusable oil filter system but that's just a price you pay for the factory cooler. I do not know if the same is true of any other aftermarket cooler.
