Well I guesse its got some character now. Really weird just crusing down the road and I get hit by something, dirt clod rock I dont know, but I ended up with dirt on my seat and a 1/2 inch or so scratch/chip on the top of my tank a few inches behind the gas cap. Sticks out like a sore thumb. Pic is not great but wondering what you guys think best way to repair/touch up? Im thinking just get some touch up paint from HD and dab it in there and call it a day. I think it goes all the way through to the primer maybe down to the metal so its never going to be perfect again with out sanding down and repainting the whole tank, kind of overkill at this point but anyway just wondering what you guys think...
The used car (and new car) lots usually have a guy or different guys that do small touch-up jobs like this type of thing, like if a new car gets a chip somehow. I'd try finding one of these type of guys, because the almost all do really nice touchup work. You might even ask at the area HD dealership if they use this type of service, or if the (HD) dealer has a detail dept if they can do a good touchup job for you.
Gilly
I looked around for you, there is a business in your area called "Dent Time" that does this type of work, as well as window tinting. You can still ask around, but here, read this link, see what you think: http://www.denttime.com/
WTF color is that?..you got lucky!!..I got tired of waiting for accidental scratches and 'dings' on my SB so I used a ball peen hammer and a screwdriver to 'fake' them ....looks cool....:>
Fill the chip hole with touchup paint, give it about 45 min, to set and take a piece of ice, melt to the contour of the spot on your tank and brush it over the spot to even it out.
Thanks guys, some pretty good advice all around. Ill check with my local dealer, I think they do use someone for paint & detail work, otherwise Ill do the touch up paint and ice thing. I dont think I want to spend alot repairing it because eventualy I wantto change the color, just not right now...
at least you got to put the scatch in it. Took mine to dealer for work(last time) and they dropped a wrench, tool something on tank and fuel cap. Dealer said it was already there BS.
Thats f'd up. My dealer used to go over the bike with a fine tooth comb (notice I said used to, would never let another person ever touch my bike again with a tool) and make me sign off, when I dropped it off and picked it up. They usually saw stuff I didnt when I was dropping it off.
