Hey guys,
I will probably go with apes since I can't go with drag bars(darned integrated risers), but I'm worried about positive control. I'm afraid that with the bars so long that it will be more difficult to maintain control of the bike. Any thoughts?

Another myth about apes is control issues.... They actually handle quite well.

I would go with 16". There very comfortable. To answer your second question I would get ride of the mid controls and get forwards before I changed the bars.

Control is not an issue. My bike handles verry well... Now, one thing to keep in mind... On TIGHT parking lot mauvers while in the seat and feet on the pegs, where you have to really crank the forks to one side, I cant reach the forward grip[:-].. Just something I keep in mind and avoid while riding.

I have 18s and the control is much better than lower bars or drag bars IMO.

If you can't do 'em at the same time, I'd do the apes first.

You can get some hwy pegs in the meantime for cheap, and put the forward controls on later when you've got the time/cash. The hwy pegs will give you the same comfortable ride.

Alos, I'd go 16". My bars are 14", and 1.25" dia. I jumped the gun a bit on the bars. Mine are made by LA Choppers, but they are similar to the Chubby's. I findbotha bit too wide at the base, and from grip to grip. I will be replacing these bars with some 16" x 1" dia apes that are a bit narrower. I think the bars where the base width matches the width of your front forks look best. JMO.

Have fun ... you'll love the apes!!!!!!

I've got a couple of follow-up questions:

1. What are the highest bars you can put on without having to re-cable?

2. Anyone riding with 16" who is on the shorter side, say 5'8"?
