hey guys need some help on this one. noticed a small leak coming from behind the inner primary of my 03 WG. cleaned the area up and traced the leak. i found a pic online of the back side of the inner primary. here is where the leak is coming from. i'll double check my service manual when i get home tonight but thought maybe someone knew off the top of their head if there is some type of seal in that spot?
No seal in that area. I'd say its either the inner primary seal leaking or the seal that fits into 5th gear on the mainshaft. Check the pulley and see if it has any oil on it.
when ya find out let me know,,got same leak on my 01 lowrider, put new inner primary on and still small drop every other day,,not gonna argue, but annoying,,,do know its from my tranny,,cause i drained tranny oil to do some work and drip quit :
Here's what happened on my 02 superglide, the seal on the shifter shaft started leaking, the dealer went in three times and finally put the upgraded seal in. That happened 23k miles ago and I haven't had any problems since then. I also put a measured 22ozs. trans fluid in, that way the oil doesn't rest on the seal when the bike is parked. Wash the area out real good, go for a ride and with a bright light and small mirror start looking. Good luck.
If you drained the oil from the tranny and it quit then its definitely the mainshaft seal. Its quite a job to replace, not for amateurs. I just completed this job a '96 wideglide. Ended up5th gear was bad and wouldnt hold the seal the way it should. Had to do this operation twice. Seems to be holding fine now that we replaced the gear and the seal.
Keep us posted with this...mine has started a leak in the same place. I took it to an indy shop here and he said he replaced all of the seals but it is still leaking about a quarter sized spot a day.
finally got a chance to tear into it. i couldnt really tell which seal was leaking as there was grime in front and behind the trans pulley. either way figured since everything was apart might as well replace all the seals. did the mainshaft seal on trans and primary, 5th gear, & jackshaft, o ring between prmary and engine. havent gotten a chance to do more than a test ride so we'll see if the problem is solved.
I had a slight leak from the inner primary. turned into a huge leak. turns out the inner primary bearing race was cracked, and walked out of the bearing. also when checking the inner primary bearing, check the fit of the bearing outer to the inner primary case. I have run into situations (primary chain too tight for years, or belt too tight) where the hole becomes elongated ever so slightly and the leak comes from around the bearing.
