Been chasing this elusive leak for a couple of months. It appears to dripping down towards the back of the Inner primary, specific to the area of the belt sprocket. Because of the location it is hard to see if it is leaking at the sprocket, but it is not leaking down from the shifter arm. Logic says it must be at the sprocket. So, unless anyone has seen this before, or has any incite as to other possibilities looks like I'm pulling the primary, clutches and inner primary to repair. Any feedback, or input appreciated.
Yepper. I'll pull it down the next day or so, no big deal. I'm pretty certain its the Main Shaft seal. Not much else back there to leak from. Thanks for the input.
Ok, has anybody changed the main shaft seal without pulling down the Inner Primary? If so, how. I wanted to pull the inner down to bench work it, but I can't get access to starter mount bolts. Short of tearing the battery, oil tank and bunch of other stuff out of the way, I was hoping there was an alternative or either a "shop" secret to get to the bolts. Any help appreciated guys.
I haven't done this but have seen in here that if you loosen but don't remove the oil tank bolts, there is enough room to get at the starter bolts with an extension on a socket wrench.
Thanks 97 dyna lowrider and QC for your input, it is appreciated. You are correct regarding the "main seal is right behind it", but I prefer to remove the inner completely. That way I can see both sides of surface, bearing/seal interface on mainshaft and jackshaft seal mate. If I go in to fix one seal, I will replace all seals. Don't wanna do it again the next year, but thank you for your input.
Replaced Jack shaft and Main shaft seal, put it all back together. Took for a 1 hour run yesterday and brought it home and cooled it down for a few hours. Came back out and it is leaking again, same location. I did a slow but meticulous cleaning, preparing and installing factory seals properly and it still leaks. Apparently I missed something. Looks like I"m going back in but before I do, I need to research possible/probable causes before embarking once again on this task.
