Important to join @ the website/forum, or just visit and check what's going on in the area? If I join the forum do they email members that are within a reasonable range when somethings going on? If they don't, I don't see the advantage to subscribing to the forum.

yes you can request email notification for missions in your area. i get notice for Oregon, Washington and sometimes Idaho.
