I think I know the answer to this question, but I'd like to know for sure. Can the fuel tank decals be removed or does the tank have to be sanded and repainted to get them off. It appears that the decals were applied then clear coated over. I'm talking about the decals not the metal emblems. Thanks.
yes you can take them off a guy showed this earlier he used mono fishing line to take them off with, polished up were they were and looked new. from the pictures he showed. he was very happy.
The tank emblems on the Fat and Street Bobs or the FXDCIcan be removed with heat or fishing line. Decals which have been clearcoated over from the factory are a different story. I think it would be quite the trick to remove them without messing up the finish.

Yep, badges are one thing. I've done it via the method above. However, clearcoated decals are something else altogether. You'd have to remove the clearcoat to get at them. $$$
I just finished the last coat of clear on my FXD repaint. To get those decals off I wetsanded through the clearcoat, barely heated it with a blowdryer, peeled them off, then cleaned the area with adhesive remover, then wet sanded again- they sure weren't coming off any other way...
One more question. I am no way shape or form a painter. After removal and further wet sanding, will the area need to be repainted or can it be buffed out to match the rest of the tank finish without repainting the entire tank.
Ok, 2 more questions. Can that 1 area be painted without removing the tank?
I would rather replace the decals with some nice looking harley shield emblems.
I would think at a minimum from looking at mine that you would need to re-clear it? By the time you get the clear sandedoff ofthe decal and get it off, you've got some pretty major changes in color and paint depth going on...But I'm certainly no pro...
